PERRYSBURG – Perrysburg’s girls basketball team could face multiple obstacles early
this season.
Due to the state championship run for the girls soccer team, the ’Jackets had their
first full practice with everyone on Nov. 13. Six of the basketball players
competed on the soccer team.
In addition to the lack of time together, Perrysburg returns just one starter from a
year ago, Sarah Baer.
“Because we’ve been here, the same staff is here and I’ve been here for a long time,
we’re not as far behind as somebody that has a new coach,” said head coach Todd
Sims. “We’re doing relatively the same things that we’ve done in the past.”
Sims is entering his fourth season as head coach and his 24th season overall with the
program. He served as an assistant in the previous 20 seasons before taking over
as head coach.
In each of Sims’ four seasons at the helm, he has had just one returning starter, as
is the case this year.
However, the ’Jackets do return fiver letter winners. They are: Baer, Abby Sattler,
Maddy Perry, Maddy Williams and Samantha Gremler.
“We may behind a little bit day-wise, but we make up for that with their athleticism
and leadership,” Sims said. “We always pick up on things really quickly.”
Perrysburg finished second to Northview in the Northern Lakes League a year ago win
an 11-3 record and was 19-5 overall. The ’Jackets also made it to the regionals
for the second time with Sims as head coach.
Perrysburg will be replacing four starters from last year in Taylor Knight, Becca
Tudor, Emily Treece and leading scorer Kelsea Newman.
“It’s always difficult to replace seniors and senior leadership,” said Sims. “But we
have a great senior group this year.
This year’s seniors are Williams, Mollie Whitacre, Katie Dunphy, Gremler and Perry.

“Obviously, the whole soccer state championship helps,” he added. “It helps
everybody. It helps the basketball program, because they’re all very good
athletes and they’re all great leaders.”
In addition the returning letter winners, Perrysburg brings up players from a junior
varsity team that went 19-1 last year.
Sims expects Northview, Southview and Anthony Wayne to be the top three teams in the
NLL this year, but Perrysburg’s athletic ability puts it in a position to
compete for the league title this year, a feat that has not been accomplished
since Sims took over.
“Our strength is our athleticism,” said Sims. “And our team chemistry is awesome.
Just off the charts. Everyone enjoys each other and hangs around each other.
“Because of our athleticism we can pressure defensively and make it into a full-court
game,” he added.
