BGHS hockey beats St. Francis to win tourney title (12-29-13)

Bowling Green won the Mister Spots Invitational high school hockey tournament Sunday with a 6-3
win over St. Francis in the Ice Arena.The Bobcats scored the final three goals to pull away from a 3-3
tie.Drew Mankowski’s power-play goal broke the tie with 3:41 left in the second period and Grant DeWitt
increased BG’s lead to two goals just 32 seconds later.The Bobcats’ clinched the win on Connor Senn’s
empty-net goal with 26 seconds remaining in the game.Senn scored twice, while Joe Costic and Phillip Rich
had the other BG goals.BG held a 36-32 edge in shots, with Tanner Fausnaugh making 29 saves.“We played
well," BG coach Dan DeWitt said. “We stuck to the game plan and did the little things correctly, and we
were rewarded for it.”The game matched the state-ranked teams for the third time this season.Sixth-ranked
St. Francis posted a 7-4 win Friday in the round-robin portion of the four-team tournament.BG, ranked ninth,
was a 4-1 winner in a Northwest Hockey Conference game Dec. 6 at Sylvania Tam-O-Shanter.“St. Francis is a
quality team, so it’s a good win and gives us some confidence,” said coach DeWitt, whose team battled
injuries and suspensions to key players during the tournament. “This shows it wasn’t a fluke we beat them
the first time.”Sunday’s game was a repeat of Friday’s penalty-filled contest, but BG had fewer penalties
Sunday.St. Francis was penalized 12 times for 27 minutes Sunday, including one major. BG capitalized by
scoring four power-play goals in 11 attempts.BG had eight penalties, all minors. St. Francis’ power play was
2-of-6, but it failed to score on its final four attempts during the final 30 minutes.“We had good
discipline and poise in terms of not taking penalties, and we had nice execution on the power play,” the
elder DeWitt said.The Bobcats had the four power-play goals, even though they didn’t score on three two-man
advantages which covered a span of 3:04.On Friday, the teams combined for 24 penalties for 87 minutes, and
19 power-play attempts. Each team had 12 penalties, including two major penalties and one-game
