Memorial Day events planned

Memorial Day commemorations will be held throughout the county this weekend.
BOWLING GREEN
The Memorial Day parade in Bowling Green will begin at the Post Office Monday at 10:30 a.m., head north
on Main Street, then proceed to Court Street, Thurstin Avenue, and then Oak Grove Cemetery.
Along the parade route, the parade will stop twice, once in front of the area near Ben Franklin, and a
second time in front of the Clazel, to allow Civil War re-enactors to fire a volley.
The parade will also stop for a wreath-laying at the war memorials located at the Wood County Courthouse.

At Oak Grove Cemetery, a service will be held featuring retired U.S. Army Col. Greg Robinette as keynote
speaker.
In case of rain, the parade will be canceled, and the service will be held at the Veteran’s Memorial
Building at City Park.
At 1 p.m., a small ceremony will be held at Memory Gardens on Liberty Hi Road.
PERRYSBURG
A Memorial Day parade organized by the American Legion will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at Louisiana Avenue
and Fifth Street.
The group will head north to Front Street, turning left and proceeding three blocks to Cherry Street
before turning left again and ending at Third Street.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. at Fort Meigs Union Cemetery.

Fort Meigs will hold events Memorial Day weekend to reenact the 1813 first siege at the fort, and to
honor the men and women of the United States armed forces.
Saturday and Sunday there will be recreated battles, musket and artillery demonstrations and camp life
demonstrations.
Attendees will be able to tour American and British military encampments, explore a Woodland Indian
encampment to learn about the Ohio Shawnee and take part in hands-on activities.
Returning to the event this year is “1813 Patrol” and a ladies tea. Ladies are invited to attend the tea
and learn more about 1812-era food and crafts. Attendees can also join an “1813 Patrol” and accompany a
squad of American soldiers on patrol as they look for the enemy.
Saturday at noon, attendees may join re-enactors and dignitaries as a monument in honor of the men of the
Commonwealth of Virginia who served at Fort Meigs is dedicated.
On Memorial Day, attendees may join the staff and volunteers at Fort Meigs in honoring the men and women
of the U.S. armed forces. War of 1812 soldiers and civilians will reenact camp life throughout the day.
A wreath-laying ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. in front of the monument within the fort. The
ceremony will end with a wreath laying and musket firing at the Pennsylvania monument.
Fort Meigs will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Memorial
Day. Event admission is $9 for adults, $8 for seniors, $5 for children 6 to 18 years old, and $1 for OHS
members; children 5 and under are free. Veterans will receive free admission to the site on Memorial
Day.
St. Rose Cemetery will host a Memorial Day Mass at 9 a.m. Monday. Those attending are asked to bring a
lawn chair. In the event of rain, the Mass will be held at the church.
BRADNER
The parade lines up at 10 a.m. at the Bradner American Legion post and steps off at 10:30 a.m. to march
to the cemetery. The guest speaker will be Jerry Drake. A potluck dinner will follow; the post provides
ham and buns. If rain, it will be held in the hall behind the post. At 2 p.m. the Legion will also hold
a service at the Graham Cemetery in Wayne.
CUSTAR
The Memorial Day parade will be Monday at 1 p.m. followed at 1:30 p.m. by a service in the Milton
Township Cemetery. The Bowling Green High School band will perform. In case of rain, the service will be
held in the American Legion Hall. The service is sponsored by the Custar American Legion Post 305.
 
DOWLING
Memorial Day services will be held at New Belleville Ridge Cemetery located at Carter and Dowling roads
Monday at 9 a.m. Monday. The Rev. Tom Zulick will conduct the service. Troy Webster American Legion Post
240 will present the colors at 9:30 a.m.
GRAND RAPIDS
Memorial Sunday services will be held Sunday at 9 a.m. in Calvary Methodist Church.
On Memorial Day, the service at Beaver Creek Cemetery will be at 9 a.m. and at Mount Pleasant Cemetery at
9:45 a.m. The parade downtown will be at 10:45 a.m. followed by the ceremony at 11:30 a.m. in St.
Patrick Cemetery. A potluck will follow at American Legion Post 232. Also hosting the events is VFW Post
4984.
JERRY CITY
The community is invited to arrive at the Jerry City Cemetery, where at 11 a.m. those gathered will
participate in the annual Memorial Day observance. This year’s guest speaker will be Army National Guard
Sgt. Wesley Socie. A salute to Jerry City veterans will be given by Walt Chambers Jr. Roll call of those
interred at Jerry City and Mt. Zion Cemetery, who have served will be by Rose Chambers. Performing for
those in attendance will be the Elmwood High School Marching Band.
NORTH BALTIMORE
The parade will start at 9 a.m. Monday at the fire hall and end at Old Maplewood Cemetery on Ohio 18.
PEMBERVILLE
The parade will start at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Legion Hall, head to the city building then turn around
and end at the Pemberville-Freedom American Legion Post #183. A ceremony will start at 10 a.m. with
speaker Randy Wingsand, pastor at Zion Lutheran Church in Luckey and a veteran of Afghanistan.
The National Anthem, 21-gun salute and Taps will be played at the Pemberville Town Hall at 9:30 a.m.
After the 10 a.m. service, a 21-gun salute and Taps will be played at Eisenhour, Pemberville and Fish
cemeteries, and Harrison Park.
The Eastwood High School Band will perform at 1:45 at the Troy Twp. Cemetery across from Luckey
Elementary. The service will begin at 2 p.m. A 21-gun salute and Taps will follow at The Mound. The rain
location is the Luckey Elementary gym.
ROSSFORD
The parade will step off Sunday at 1:30 p.m. from the Edward Ford Memorial and proceed to Veterans Park,
where the American Legion will conduct a service.
SCOTCH RIDGE
Troy Webster American Legion Post 240 will place a wreath and hold a salute ceremony at 9 a.m. at Scotch
Ridge Cemetery.
TONTOGANY
The Memorial Sunday church services will be held in Tontogany Presbyterian Church Sunday at 10 a.m.
On Memorial Day, ceremonies hosted by the Lybarger-Grimm American Legion Post 441 will begin with a flag
raising at the post and decoration of marker stones. The parade will step off at 10:15 a.m. at Tontogany
Cemetery. A ceremony will be held and Sadie Van Horn, a 2012-2013 state alternate in the Americanism
Test, will give the address.
After returning to the legion hall, the Sons of the American Legion will judge the bicycles, tricycles
and floats, followed by a potluck.
WALBRIDGE
The Memorial Day service begins Monday at 9:30 a.m. with a parade to Lake Township Cemetery on Walbridge
Road.
A service at the cemetery will begin at 10 a.m.
After the service, Walbridge VFW Post 9963 will unveil a new mural honoring the military in the banquet
hall.
WESTON
American Legion Post 409 and Auxiliary will provide a picnic meal for veterans and their families as a
way of remembering past and present veterans on Memorial Day from 5 to 7 p.m. at Michael Merrill Park,
on Taylor Street near the reservoir.
