PERRYSBURG – Students interested in exploring careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)
are participating in a unique camp this week at Penta Career Center.
Penta’s STEM Summer Camp ends Friday and about 100 area students in grades 7 through 9 have been
participating in this hands-on camp where they are explore areas such as Computer Hardware/Networking,
Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Construction Carpentry, Manufacturing Technology and Plant
Biotechnology.
The students participate in a different program each day which is designed to increase their
understanding of how Science, Technology, Engineering and Math skills are used in a variety of career
fields. Some of the hands-on activities include using construction tools and geometric theories to build
a 40-foot Viking ship in the Construction Carpentry program; exploring GPS technology using handheld
devices to survey and make patterns in the Geographic Information Systems program; extracting DNA from
strawberries in the Plant Biotechnology program; building and testing water-powered rockets in the
Manufacturing Technology program; and creating alien robots for competitions in the Computer
Hardware/Networking program.
