About 60 Heidelberg University students were honored for their achievements in the classroom and in the
community during the annual Student Awards Celebration. Local students who received an award are:
Senior Aaron Kapelka of Fostoria, the Paul H. Hoernemann Award and the William F. Steele Prize in
Mathematics
Senior Jennifer Simko of Millbury, the E.J. Shives Prize in Chemistry
Senior Felicia Konrad of North Baltimore, the Martin Walker Prize in History
Joseph Betori, a senior at Marquette University studying International Relations from Perrysburg, will
study at Marquette University’s Les Aspin Center for Government in Washington, D.C., this summer. While
in Washington, D.C., Betori will live in an academic community and attend classes at the Les Aspin
Center campus just blocks from the Capitol. In addition, Betori will have the opportunity to visit
government agencies and listen to a variety of educational speakers to hear their insiders’ perspectives
on American democracy.
The University of Findlay recently presented the Coca-Cola Awards to student-athletes who earned the
highest GPA on their respective teams during the 2013-2014 academic year.
Samantha Hassen of Perrysburg is a member of the cross country team and pursuing a degree in middle
childhood education.
Students at the University of Findlay recently participated in an instrumental recital. Amanda Ridenour
of Bloomdale played "Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg" on the tuba by Richard Wagner.
The following local residents recently were initiated into the honor society of Phi Kappa Phi, the
nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines: Kacey Podolak
of Bowling Green, initiated at East Tennessee State University; and Amy Cress of Bowling Green,
initiated at The University of Toledo.
Students at the University of Findlay recently were honored at a dinner for completing their student
teaching assignments. Samantha Hassen of Perrysburg student taught at Donnell Middle School in Findlay.
Sarah Wilson of Rossford student taught at Glenwood Elementary School in Rossford Schools.
The 10th graduating class of Terra State Community College’s Associate Degree Nursing program recently
received their nursing pins. Each received a Nightingale Lamp, which was lit by nursing faculty,
Those local students receiving their Terra State nursing pins were: Erin Brubaker of Wayne; Jessica
DeLaRosa of Fostoria; and Emilee Valle of Bowling Green.
Emily Limes of Bowling Green has been awarded the Margaret McDonald Scholarship for the 2014-2015
academic year. Limes, daughter of Rod and Laurie Limes, is heading into her fourth year at Ohio State
University majoring in Agribusiness and Applied Economics. She is a member of the Livestock Judging
Team, Saddle & Sirloin Club, and Buckeye Livestock Judging Club.
A 2010 graduate of Otsego High School, she plans to attend graduate school at Ohio State in Agricultural
Com-munications and continue to progress with her family’s farm as well as raise show pigs and club
lambs.
The Margaret McDonald Scholarship, open to Agribusiness and Applied Economics majors at Ohio State, is
awarded on the basis of scholarship, leadership, and potential contribution to the agricultural
industry.
