BG goes forward on new secure high school entrance

Work on the new, more secure, entrance to Bowling Green High School will start next week.
The district’s board of education approved a contract with Adohr General Contractors, of Monclova, at
Tuesday’s meeting.
The contract, at $96,000, will place an entrance door to the office immediately inside the outside set of
the building entrance doors.
Now, visitors are rung into the school and must turn right down the hallway to enter the school office.

The work should be completed by July 31.
The plans also call for moving the office reception area, reconfiguring the principal’s office, and
removing an office wall to make a conference room.
Kent Buehrer, of the Buehrer Group, said seven contractors attended the pre-bid meeting, but that only
one submitted a bid.
He said the main concern was the six-week timetable for the project.
Also at the meeting, the board named Daniel Black as the new high school assistant principal. He has been
a middle school industrial technology teacher.
He replaces Robert Yenrick, who was named executive director of pupil services. Black was given a
one-year contract with a base salary of $65,500.
The board also:
• Honored Maria Horrigan, who as a junior was the Division I pole vault state champion with a vault of 12
feet 10 1/4 inches.
Duff Madaras said in his 44 years as track coach, he has never had a state champion.
City Councilman Bob McComber attended the meeting to read a proclamation from Mayor Dick Edwards
proclaiming June 17, 2014, as Maria Horrigan Recognition Day.
• Accepted resignations from Adam Landry, choral director; Kelsey Batey, second grade at Conneaut; Ashley
Jeschelnig, intervention specialist; and Michelle Hahn, third grade Crim; and the retirement of Susan
Swegan, first grade at Conneaut; and Steven Wielinski, maintenance.
• Heard presentations for four PACE students on their independent study program: Eli Marx, third grade;
Gabe Mott, fourth grade; Jordan Schuman; and Bob Walters, sixth grade.
Marx talked about the Periodic Table of Elements and why they were divided into rows and columns.
Mott’s project was Electricity, and he talked about the different ways to generate electricity and showed
the movie trailer from "Frankenweenie," which has a boy bring his dog back to life a la
Frankenstein.
Schuman chose Dogs as his subject, and used a DNA kit to determine what breeds contributed to his two
mix-breed dogs.
Walters picked the Blackfoot Indians after spending time in Canada as a People to People ambassador last
year. He explained how the tribe was dependent on the buffalo, plus many of the rituals celebrated.
