Bowling Green’s Ralfs Freibergs advanced to the quarterfinals of the men’s Olympic hockey tournament
Tuesday.
The sophomore defenseman played for Latvia, which upset Switzerland, 3-1, in an elimination-round game.
He was not on the ice when Switzerland scored.
Freibergs had one shift in the game, that coming on the power play for 1:28 in the second period.
Latvia, seeded 11th for the 12-team elimination round, plays third-seeded Canada Wednesday at noon.
Switzerland was the No. 6 seed.
The win avenged Latvia’s 1-0 loss to Switzerland during the preliminary round.
The victory was Latvia’s first in the Olympics since 2002 when it won twice after a 66-year absence from
the Games. Latvia won twice that year, but still finished 10th.
Latvia has played in four of the five Olympics since NHL players became eligible for the tournament.
