High rain has impacted the annual harmful algal bloom in Lake Erie resulting in a forecast of a reduced severity from previous years — but a significant increase over last year.

A severity index of 7.5 has been predicted for the algal bloom in Lake Erie by the Ohio State University Ohio Sea Grant. That is lower than the 10-point level of 2011 and the 10.5 level of 2015.
