ROSSFORD — Details of the new indoor soccer dome and athletic facility were announced by Total Sports Rossford at a special ground-breaking service on Tuesday morning.
The dome will house an 84,000-square-foot facility, which will include a full-size indoor soccer field. The dome involves a better than $3 million investment for the sports company. The dome is projected to be 75-feet high to allow the facility to be used for pretty much any athletic sport which can be played outdoors on grass.
“This is a great day for us at Total Sports,” said Tony Moscone, general manager of the company. “This will include a full field for soccer and other sports.”
He listed for example soccer, lacrosse, baseball, softball and  field hockey, along with the ability use the facility for expos, corporate outings and parties.
Rossford’s mayor, Neil A. MacKinnon III was on hand and touted the new facility’s ability to help Rossford develop into “one of the premiere entertainment” areas.
Moscone said Total Sports has been pleased calling the reception and welcome they have received since purchasing and modernizing the facility.
“We have been welcomed to Rossford with open arms and we hope this dome and the services it will provide will be an indication of how much we are looking forward to being a part of the northern Ohio community for a long time,” he wrote in a press release,” reiterating some of the same thoughts during the ground-breaking ceremony.
“It’s been fantastic since Day One.”
He said purchasing and updating the brick and mortar building was Phase 1, with the new dome considered Phase 2. Moscone said they will consider more outdoor fields and facilities down the road for Phase 3.
“We want to help Rossford by providing a quality indoor recreational area. As Rossford grows, we will grow,” the general manager said. “There is a definite need for this.”
He explained the dome’s addition might only add one or two new positions for the company; however it will also provide work for referees and other game officials who will be hired to handle events.
The dome is insulated but currently is not planned to include air conditioning. Moscone said it will be properly built for and fitted to include room for air conditioning if that should become necessary. “We’ll be ready,” he said.
We estimate we will serve 400,000 to 500,000 visitors a year.
He said based on their current customers at the complex, he estimated roughly 75 percent of their business are youth oriented.
Total Sports first opened in Rossford last September. They have several other domes within the company, but this is the first in Northern Ohio.
The dome is being constructed in pieces offsite so Moscone said they expect the dome to be up and in operation by December.
Once in operation it will expand the services provided at the current location which has three indoor soccer fields, two which are boarded, a sport court area, a field-turfed area for training and a large concession area.
The present facility also incudes a large concession area, private offices and private rooms. They also have outdoor lighted, sand volleyball courts.
