Concerts and cans: Toledo Symphony patrons can help curb hunger

0

Those who attend select Toledo Symphony Orchestra concerts this month with a nonperishable food item will
help alleviate hunger locally.
The Symphony is taking part in the League of American Orchestras’ “Orchestras Feeding America” campaign
in March. The TSO is partnering with the Martin Luther King Kitchen for the Poor.
Concertgoers are encouraged to bring food items to fill bins at the following performances:
• Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, 8 p.m. Saturday at the Stranahan Theater.
• The TSO and Toledo Symphony Youth Orchestras Side-by-Side concert, 4 p.m. Sunday at the Peristyle.
• Mahler’s Fourth, 8 p.m. March 17 and 18 at the Peristyle.
• Bach, Beethoven and Mozart, 7:30 p.m. March 25 at the Franciscan Center, Lourdes University.
The food items should be those of substance, such as canned vegetables, canned meats, noodles, rice,
spaghetti and chicken and beef stews. Paper products, such as toilet paper and paper towels, also are
welcome. Items that do not travel well, such as potato chips and other snack foods, are discouraged.
Concertgoers can put their food donations in containers in the lobby of each venue.
Each of the concerts has something special:
• Four-time Grammy winner Benatar, acknowledged as the leading female rock vocalist of the 1980s, and
Giraldo, a musician, producer, arranger and songwriter, are a husband-wife entertainment duo that
continues to thrill music lovers. They join with the Toledo Symphony for an evening of rock hits with a
symphony twist, including “Love is a Battlefield” and “We Belong.”
• Four young soloists who won the Toledo Symphony League’s 2016 Young Artists Competition  will perform
as part of the annual Side-by-Side concert, where members of the Toledo Symphony Youth Orchestras
perform with Toledo Symphony musicians.
• Soprano Rachele Gilmore joins the symphony under the baton of Stefan Sanderling in the first of his
three final appearances as the TSO’s Principal Conductor for Mahler’s Fourth.
• Guest conductor Marcelo Lehninger and guest pianist Ran Dank join the Symphony in Bach, Beethoven, and
Mozart.
Tickets to these concerts are available by calling the TSO box office at 419-246-8000 or by visiting
