PERRYSBURG — U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) visited a Wood County summer manufacturing camp for fourth-eighth grade students.
The camp took place last month at the Dana Advanced Manufacturing Training Center at Owens Community College.
“It’s fun asking the kids questions. I always ask them what the most memorable activity was for them,” Brown said. “They all have interesting answers. The students have a refreshing way in which they view the world.”
The camp gave local students the chance to explore manufacturing careers and learn from experts.
Students learned how products are made, participated in team-building exercises, and worked on a project specific to their community.
“Twenty-two students participated in this camp. They did precision machining and welding at the career center,” said Shannon Fisher, staff member for OhioMeansJobs – Wood County. “They did robotics and electrical here.”
Brown spoke with students who were learning about Ohio manufacturing. Since 2013, Brown’s office has assisted in organizing more than 150 camps throughout the state. This year, Brown’s office will help organize at least 50 camps in 29 countries.
“The students also had the opportunity to learn about marketing, finance, and more. A lot of the people we partnered with talked about their careers, so students could learn more about the jobs they want to pursue,” said Katie Throckmorton, staff member for OhioMeansJobs – Wood County.
