Area students attend Buckeye Girls, Boys State

These are the local high school juniors, submitted to the Sentinel-Tribune, who will be attending Buckeye Girls State at Bowling Green State University next week and Buckeye Boys State, which will be held at Miami University, Oxford.

Each year, hundreds of high school juniors attend to learn about American government and how each level operates.

The week is full of campaigning, listening to Ohio government officials, caucuses, voting and running a mock government. They learn the duties, rights and privileges of citizenship.

Troy-Webster American Legion Post and Auxiliary 240, Luckey, is sponsoring delegates.

Isabelle Chappuies and Livia Segal from Eastwood High School, and Adelaida Moreno and Sarah Xaiyarath, from Northwood High School, are being sponsored.

Chappuies is involved in National Honor Society, Key Club, Junior Executive team, People Inc., One Step Ahead, International Club, Student Council and youth group. She is the daughter of Matt and Holly Chappuies.

Segal is involved in NHS, Student Council, Key Club, Junior Executive team, cross country and track. She is the daughter of Aaron and Nadine Meyer.

Moreno is involved in marching and concert bands, NHS, varsity softball, varsity quiz bowl, varsity cheer team, Business Professionals of America, powerlifting and the high school musical. She is a camp counselor. She is the daughter of Mario and Erminia Moreno.

Xaiyarath is involved in marching band, Key Club, Student Council, soccer, track and musical crew. She is a field commander, Sun Federal Bank volunteer and basketball team manager. She is the daughter of Soulin and Martha Xaiyarath.

Troy-Webster American Legion Post and Auxiliary 240 is also sponsoring Elden Slack from Eastwood and Colin Arthur, Jonathan Mendez and James Stribny from Northwood.

Arthur is on the speech and debate team and involved in athletics. He is the son of Christopher and Tammi Arthur.

Mendez is involved in football and wrestling and has received academic football and varsity wrestling awards. He is the son of Socorro Mendez and Erika Guerrero.

Slack is involved in football, Boy Scouts and the digital arts program at Penta Career Center. He has earned a track and field varsity letter, been on the honor roll and was named Eastwood outstanding artist. He is the son of Michael and Bridget Verrengia.

Lybarger Grimm Auxiliary 441, Alva N. Sidle Auxiliary 232 and Weston Auxiliary 409 are sponsoring Catherine Getzinger and Sabrina Martinez-Buehrer, who attend Otsego High School.

Getzinger is involved in American Heritage Girls, the Otsego Round Table podcast, Otsego Elementary Steam Camp and Vacation Bible School. She is a Sunday school teacher and a second grade reading mentor. She is the daughter of Nick and Tracy Getzinger.

Martinez-Buehrer is on the high school and travel softball teams. She is also involved in band, quiz bowl, and speech and debate. She is a Sunday school assistant at Tontogany Calvary Church, a member of Lybarger-Grimm Auxiliary Unit 441 and a college credit plus student. She is the daughter of Brenda Martinez.

The Albert Bowe American Legion Auxiliary Unit 338 is sponsoring Caitlyn Kozina and Lainee Partin, who attend Northwood High School.

Kozina is involved in cross country, marching, concert and pep bands, track and field and chess club. She is the daughter of Melissa and Jason Kozina.

Partin is a member of the Youth Leadership Toledo Class of 2022 and HOBY Ohio West. She is involved in Key Club, choir, Student Council, volleyball and acapella choir. She has been junior class officer and president, Key Club vice president, sophomore leadership president and Teen Institute member. She is the daughter of Leslie and Shannon Partin.

Benjamin Burton is vice president of the French Club and a member of the French National Honor Society at Bowling Green High School. He is co-captain of the quiz bowl team and a NHS member. He participates in band and orchestra. He works at the Studio Connection as a teacher assistant for piano and serves as a tech for the Bowling Green Church of the Nazarene livestream platforms. He is sponsored by the Bowling Green American Legion Post 45. He is the son of Julie and Terry Burton.
