PERRYSBURG – Patients experiencing an active heart attack or needing interventional procedures, including stents and clearing blocked arteries, will soon be able to be treated at Mercy Health – Perrysburg Hospital.

Mercy Health is proud to announce that Wood County’s first and only cardiac catheterization lab was recently granted the designation of a Level II facility. Mercy Health – Perrysburg Hospital, located at the junction of I-475 and Ohio 25, will begin providing the more advanced level of heart care on July 7.

“Mercy Health has a legacy of providing the highest quality of care to those we serve and with the recent gap in health care left in the Perrysburg, Maumee and Waterville region, we accelerated plans to ensure more cardiac procedures can be performed on site at Mercy Health – Perrysburg Hospital,” said Bob Baxter, president, Mercy Health – Toledo “I am grateful to the team of physicians and leaders who worked tirelessly to ensure that area residents have these services close to home.”

A cardiac catheterization lab, also known as a cath lab, is a specialized area used for minimally invasive tests and advanced cardiac procedures. During a cardiac catheterization, a catheter, or a long, thin, flexible tube, is inserted in a blood vessel and threaded to your heart, allowing specialists to perform various tests and treatments.

The Mercy Health – Perrysburg Hospital cath lab opened as a Level I in December. The medical team on site at Perrysburg Hospital is comprised of skilled specialists with a combined experience of performing more than 1000 cardiac procedures. Recognizing community need for an elevated level of service and having the team already in place, Mercy Health applied for a Level II designation from the Ohio Department of Health.

This new designation means local EMS have a closer location to bring patients experiencing heart attacks.

“This designation is great news for the community served by Mercy Health – Perrysburg Hospital for it allows us to treat a patient locally who is experiencing a heart attack,” said Dr. Ameer Kabour, Cardiology Medical Director, Mercy Health – Perrysburg Hospital.

As part of the process, letters of support were submitted from six local EMS leaders as well as State Representative Haraz N. Ghanbari, R-Perrysburg. Mercy Health is grateful to our partners for their support as we worked through this process.

“Time is critical during an emergency and offering these procedures here in Wood County will certainly save lives,” Ghanbari said. “Mercy Health – Perrysburg Hospital has the interventional cardiologist, trained cardiac catheterization team and ICU staff to handle STEMI patients and improve patient heart muscle and recovery.”

Mercy Health – Perrysburg Hospital, which is a department of Mercy Health – St. Vincent Medical Center, offers 46 private inpatient rooms and comprehensive services such as surgery, critical care, on-site lab, imaging and diagnostic services and a full-service, 24/7 emergency room.
