Defiance woman sentenced for drug trafficking

A former Defiance woman who is now in prison has been sentenced for trafficking methamphetamine.

Kelley Jones, 36, Defiance, was transported from the jail Monday to the courtroom of Wood County Common Pleas Judge Molly Mack.

Wood County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Lara Rump said the plea agreed upon was for Jones to plead guilty to the amended charge of aggravated trafficking in drugs, a third-degree felony.

Jones had been indicted in July for aggravated trafficking in drugs and aggravated possession of drugs, both first-degree felonies.

The possession charge was dismissed.

On May 29, 2021, an Ohio Highway Patrol trooper stopped Jones in Plain Township and a probable cause search of the vehicle uncovered syringes, a glass pipe and a water bottle with syringes.

The water bottle was tested and came back positive for methamphetamines in the amount equal to the bulk amount but less than five times the bulk amount, Rump said,

A statewide warrant was issued in August after she failed to appear for her scheduled arraignment.

The court was notified in March that Jones was incarcerated in the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville after being sentenced in Defiance County for domestic violence. Her sentence on that charge ends March 27, 2024.

Defense attorney Kent Sobran said the drugs were for personal use and asked for a sentence concurrent to what she already is serving.

“She’s going back to Marysville no matter what,” he said.

Mack imposed a sentence of 24 months to be served concurrently with her current sentence.

Jones must pay a $5,000 fine.
