MILLBURY — The Lake Flyers are ready to soar this summer.

Jodi Takats, director of curriculum and special education, talked about Lake Local Schools’ version of summer school at the April board of education meeting.

Students can get a refresher on their studies, work out and eat breakfast and lunch, she said.

“All of our students can come in, get breakfast, get lunch, get around their workouts, make sure they’re coming in to lift, get either a warm meal or a bagged lunch — if they just want to grab a peanut butter sandwich and go,” Takats said. “We want to make sure our students take advantage of it.”

Summer Soar is being offered to students entering kindergarten through grade 12. The program will be held Monday-Friday from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the middle school and high school.

The cost is $25, which covers everything, including transportation and meals, Takats said.

After the meeting, Superintendent Jim Witt said providing meals to students in the summer is important. Over half of the students at Lake qualify for a free or reduced-fee meal, he said.

The board hired over 40 teachers for the Summer Soar program at $30 per hour.

In other business, the board approved a five-year contract with Northwood Schools for a shared fleet coordinator

“We are going to share a bus mechanic … and we’re going to start taking our buses down to Northwood’s bus garage and do our repairs there.

“They have some updated equipment and four bays where you can work on multiple buses at the same time,” Witt said. “It’s really a win-win.”

Lake and Northwood have already been sharing a transportation director.

“I agree with Jim, it’s an excellent arrangement,” said board member Tim Krugh.

Also at the meeting, the board was introduced to Nicole Schmeltz, the new athletic director.

Witt said that 50 applications were received for the job.

“We interviewed several and she rose to the top,” he said. “We’re excited for her to lead our athletic program.”

Schmeltz is a 2014 graduate of Lake High School, a 2018 graduate of Huntington University where she was a member of the track and soccer teams. She has taught social studies at Northwood High School since 2018 and has been an assistant volleyball coach, the student council adviser, and a member of the building leadership team. Schmeltz was an assistant track coach at Eastwood High School and served as the assistant athletic director for Eastwood from 2018-22.

Schmeltz is currently in the process of moving to Walbridge with her husband, Nick, and their two daughters, Nora and Amelia.

Her annual salary is $70,000.

Longtime athletic director Dave Shaffer is retiring, but will continue on with Lake as director of facilities and maintenance.

The board also approved donations from Maumee Bay Turf of $1,000 for baseball uniforms and $100 in clothing for elementary students from St. Paul’s Church.
