Prep Roundup: No. 1 Eastwood baseball improves to 18-0

PEMBERVILLE — Eastwood baseball stayed unbeaten at 18-0 overall and 9-0 in the Northern Buckeye Conference after an 18-1 victory over visiting Woodmore Thursday.

Eastwood has moved into the top spot in the state’s Division III coaches’ poll, moving ahead of second place Fredericktown.

Coldwater is third, followed by Liberty-Benton, LaBrae, Greeneview, Wayne Trace, Portsmouth, Lakeview, and Milan Edison.

Against the Wildcats, Kadyn Donnell got the complete game win on the mound, striking out seven, walking none, and allowing three hits and one run over five innings. He threw 58 pitches, including 39 strikes, while facing 17 batters.

At the plate, the Eagles had 15 hits, scoring 13 runs in the second inning. They also scored two in the first, one in the third, and two in the fourth.

Tristan Schuerman was 2-for-2 with three RBIs, and he scored three runs, Jordan Pickerel was 2-for-2, and Colton Woodward was 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Jackson Bauer and Caleb Recker had triples and Case Boos and Brandon Falls had doubles. Also getting base hits were Andrew Badenhop, Connor Norton, Xander Greulich, Vincent Schwartz, and Donnell.

The Eagles also had six stolen bases, including one each by Boos, Schuerman, Woodward, Falls, and Donnell. Boos also reached after getting hit by a pitch and scored three runs.

Tyler Smith was 2-for-2 with a double and RBI and Michael Seeger also hit a double for the Wildcats. Seeger and Blane Overmyer combined to pitch for Woodmore.

On Wednesday, Eastwood defeated Genoa, 10-0, in an NBC contest on the Comets’ field.

Ethan Rapp started on the mound for the Eagles, striking out 11, walking two, and allowing three hits while holding Genoa scoreless through six innings. Rapp threw 101 pitches, including 64 strikes in facing 24 batters.

Jarod Bonfiglio closed in the seventh, striking out one and not allowing a hit or run.

At the plate, Badenhop was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and he scored twice, Rapp hit a double, and Boos, Bauer, Donnell, and Woodward had base hits.

Isaac Reynolds, Schuerman, Bauer, Boos and Woodward had stolen bases, and four Eastwood batters, Reynolds, Pickerel, Bauer, and Woodward reached after getting hit by a pitch. Schuerman also had a sacrifice bunt.

The Eagles got off to a good start offensively, scoring two runs in each of the first and second innings, adding another in the third, a run in the fifth and added four more runs in the seventh.

The win came after Eastwood had to score four runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat Genoa, 8-7, in their first meeting earlier this season.

Bowling Green 3, Napoleon 0

Bowling Green junior pitcher Jack Brown struck out seven, walked none, and allowed just two hits in pitching a complete-game seven inning 3-0 shutout victory over visiting Napoleon in Northern Lakes League action Wednesday.

Brown needed just 88 pitches, including 62 for strikes, facing 24 batters.

He got offensive support from Brock Hastings, who was 3-for-3 with a triple. The Bobcats scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning and added an insurance run in the sixth.

Caleb Kuntsmann and Rhett Winger had RBI base hits for the Bobcats and Carter Earl had a stolen base, scoring a run after reaching on a walk.

Kunstmann and Brent Boston both reached on two walks apiece, and each scored a run.

Trey Rubinstein pitched for the Wildcats, striking out five, walking six, allowing six hits and two earned runs through six innings. Rubinstein and Parker Woods had Napoleon’s only base hits.

Elmwood 2, Lake 0

MILLBURY — Elmwood baseball scored two runs in the top of the 10th to break open a scoreless tie in a pitchers’ duel and defeat Lake, 2-0, in Northern Buckeye Conference baseball Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Elmwood’s Mason Oliver threw out a potential winning run at the plate with one out in the bottom of the ninth to give the Royals’ offense the chance to score the game-winners.

Lake pitcher Drew Tajblik pitched nine scoreless innings, striking out 13 and allowing just three hits, but it was not enough.

Elmwood pitcher Tanner Shaffer got the save in the bottom of the 10th, striking out two, walking none, and allowing one hit in one inning on the mound.

Jimmie Palmer started on the mound for Elmwood and had similar numbers as Tajblik, striking out 13 and allowing three hits over nine innings. Kolton Adkins took the loss for Lake in the 10th.

At the plate for Elmwood, Mason Mossbarger had a base hit and RBI, Colton Bradford had a double and scored a run, Allen Sterling and Palmer both hit doubles, and Andrew Holland had a base hit.

For Lake, Jay Blazevich, Connor Eck, Tajblik, and Jack Sobzack had base hits.

Lake 4, Van Buren 3

MILLBURY — Lake pitcher Caleb Tobias struck out four, walked one, allowed three hits and one earned run as the Flyers defeated Van Buren, 4-3, in non-league baseball Thursday.

Tobias pitched 6.2 innings to get the win, throwing 94 pitches, including 52 strikes to 28 batters. Jay Blazevich closed and got the final out and the save for the Flyers.

The Flyers trailed 2-1 after three innings, but Lake scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a lead they would not relinquish.

Gavin Kohholfer was 3-for-3 with a stolen base and RBI and Jack Sobzack and Nate Wagner had doubles for Lake. Connor Eck and Carter Behlmer also had stolen bases for Lake.

Jackets fall to Bulldogs, Cougars

PERRYSBURG — Defiance pitcher David Jiminez pitched a complete-game no hit shutout as the Bulldogs defeated Perrysburg, 1-0, at Jim Leyland Field Thursday in non-league baseball.

Jiminez struck out four, walked none, in throwing 98 pitches, including 61 strikes, to 24 Perrysburg batters. The Bulldogs did commit two errors, taking away Jiminez’s perfect game hopes.

Perrysburg freshman pitcher Tyler Palmer made it a pitchers’ duel, striking out three, walking two, and allowing five hits and one run, which Defiance scored in the top of the first. Palmer threw 74 pitches, including 49 strikes, to 27 batters. Palmer did not allow an extra base hit.

Getting base hits for Defiance were Jiminez, Jackson Walter, Gavino Gomez, Aidan Kiessling, and Torin Long. Jiminez scored the winning run.

On Wednesday in Sylvania, Southview pitcher Nate Ball struck out one, walked one, and allowed four hits and no runs over six innings as the Cougars shut out the Yellow Jackets, 10-0, in a Northern Lakes League game.

Getting base hits for Perrysburg were Trent Bezek, Jack Losee, Abram Hire, and Braxton Mefferd. Mefferd also had a stolen base.

For Southview, Sammy Rogenski was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, Avery Offenburg was 2-for-3 with a double, Luke Hermiller was 2-for-4, and Gavin Johns and Ramzee Abuhashish had base hits.

Danny Nusbaum had a stolen base for the Cougars and Jameson Carey laid down a sacrifice bunt.

Parker Faris started on the mound for Perrysburg, striking out eight, walking two, and allowing four hits and two runs as the Cougars only led 2-0 after four innings.

Brady Zilles and Landon Winters combined to pitch the final 1.2 innings as Southview scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to walk off with a mercy-rule victory.

Southview only hit Perrysburg, 8-4, but the Yellow Jackets had four errors while the Cougars were perfect in the field.

Bowling Green 4, Napoleon 3

Meghan Kramp struck out 16, walked three, and allowed five hits and one earned run as the Bowling Green softball held on to defeat visiting Napoleon, 4-3, over seven innings in Northern Lakes League action Wednesday.

Kramp threw 143 pitches, including 90 strikes in facing 31 batters. Katelynn Rashley also pitched to one batter, allowing a hit, before Kramp reentered to finish the game, not only getting the win but the save.

BG scored in the bottom of the first to take an early lead, and then scored again in the fourth and added two in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead.

But the Wildcats scored one in the sixth and two in the seventh, but BG kept the Wildcats from scoring the tying run, even though Napoleon left eight base runners stranded throughout the game.

Samantha Trimpey led BG at the plate with two doubles and an RBI, and Zoe Ziems and Taylor Rothenbuhler also hit doubles.

Sarah Konecny, Ella Manley, and Kennedy Brown had base hits for the Bobcats. Brown also had a sacrifice bunt, Cassidy Kroegel was hit by a pitch and Brown, Trimpey and Kroegel had stolen bases.

For Napoleon, Arriana Kiessling started in the circle, striking out five, walking four, and allowing one hit and three runs, but only two were earned, through four innings.

Jadyn Wilcox threw the final two innings, striking out two, walking one, allowing six hits and one run.

At the plate, Erica Meyer was 2-for-4, Wilcox was 2-for-3, and Faith Rubinstein had a base hit. Meyer, Wilcox, and Regan Burkey had stolen bases.

Perrysburg 23, Sylvania Southview 2

SYLVANIA—Perrysburg softball hit five home runs and scored in every inning to rout Southview, 23-2, in a Northern Lakes League game Wednesday.

Hayley Griggs hit three home runs for the Yellow Jackets and was 3-for-4 with a sacrifice fly and seven RBIs. Riley Doria and Cassie Plummer also hit homers for the Jackets.

The Yellow Jackets outhit the Cougars, 20-5, and scored two runs in the first, seven in the second, three in the third, five in the fourth, and sixth in the fifth.

Maison Gerrard started in the circle for Perrysburg, striking out four, walking one, and allowing five hits and one earned run through four innings in getting the win.

Maddie Von Sacken closed in the fifth, striking out two, walking none and not allowing a hit or run.

At the plate, Plummer was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Gerrard had two doubles and four RBIs, Morgan Hoverman was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, Jess Miller was 2-for-5 with two RBIs, Lexie Vaillant was 2-for-3 with a double, and Doria was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Alyssa Bradford and Ella Leonard had doubles for Perrysburg, and Von Sacken and Natalie Getchey had base hits. Hoverman and Gerrard had stolen bases and Sophie Halm and Hoverman reached after getting hit by a pitch.

Hoverman scored four runs and Yesenia You and Plummer scored three runs apiece.

For the Cougars, Emma Jacobs hit a home run and Rachel Katafiasz, Paige DeShetler, Lacie Filas, and Karsen Bittel had base hits. Jacobs and DeShetler combined to pitch for the Cougars.

Elmwood downs Wildcats, Flyers

WOODVILLE — Elmwood pounded out 18 hits and scored 11 runs in the top of the fourth, defeating Woodmore, 23-5, in Northern Buckeye Conference softball Thursday.

Kennadie Plouck was 4-for-5 with a double and six RBIs, Mariela Garcia was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and she scored four runs, and Abigail Allison was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and she scored five runs, and Trinity Sander was 3-for-4 with a double to lead the Royals.

Dakota Rader-King was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Kate Keiffer hit a home run, scored three runs and had five RBIs, and Kynzie Science hit a double and had two RBIs/

Tianna Galbraith had a base hit and scored two runs, and Emaline Lee scored three runs as a courtesy runner. Science also reached after getting hit by a pitch.

Keiffer started in the circle, striking out five, walking three, and allowing seven hits and three earned runs through four innings. Alyssa Allgire closed in the fifth and did not allow a hit or run.

Woodmore, which trailed only 6-4 after three innings, did have some offense early on.

After scoring on a wild pitch in the first inning, sophomore Kara Schneider drove in a pair of Wildcat runs with a double in the second inning and senior Lilly Strong added an RBI single later in the frame.

Strong also got an RBI with a ground out in the fourth inning. Junior Cameran Quisno started and went 3.1 innings striking out three. Freshman Camille Strong pitched the final 1.2 innings.

Schneider had two doubles in the game and freshman Kelsey Kaylor also had two hits.

On Wednesday, Elmwood defeated Lake, 13-5, in another NBC game on the Flyers’ field. Elmwood took an early 11-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth, leaving little doubt. The Royals outhit the Flyers, 17-9.

Abigail Allison was 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs, Keiffer was 3-for-5, Science was 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs, Garcia was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, Plouck was 2-for-5, and Cara Frank was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Rader-King had a double, and Sander and Leah Allison had base hits. Sander also reached after getting hit by a pitch and Abigail Allison, Plouck, Garcia and Keiffer had stolen bases.

Keiffer got the complete game victory, striking out six, walking four, allowing nine hits and three earned runs through seven innings. Kali Bedford took the loss for the Flyers.

Alivia King was 3-for-4 with an RBI for Lake, Bedford was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, K Pietrzak was 2-for-4 with a double, and Jessie Materni and A Boehm had base hits. Diem Isbell had two stolen bases and scored two runs.

Bobcats, Blue Devils split in track

In track and field at Bobcat Stadium, Bowling Green girls defeated Springfield 70-67, but the BG boys were beaten by the Blue Devils, 70-66.

In the girls meet, BG field event winners were Allie Fry in the shot put (33 feet, 6¾ inches) and discus (122-6).

BG’s 4×200 meter relay team of Lizzie Amspoker, Savannah Janes, Shelby Janes, and Sydney Maas won in 1:57.5. The 4×400 team, Amspoker, Allison Wiles, Addie Naus and Shelby Janes won in 4:40.5

BG’s Katherine Tyson won the 300-meter hurdles (49.3 seconds), Londyn Thompson won the 800 run (2:39.37), and Natalie Neeson won the 3200 (13:33).

In the boys meet, the Bobcats took three of four relays. Evan Romero, Erek Kendrick, Jackson Kruegger, and Aidan Novinsky won the 4×800 (9:08.1).

Jake Amspoker, Sami Ashakih, Peyton Harris and Alex Xu won the 4×200 (1:41.8) and Cor’Neal Lawrence, Harris, Brogan Pasley and Jay Shannon won the 4×100 (48.39).

Kadin Shank won the 110 hurdles (15.58), Liam Triggs won the 1600 (4:56.47), Kendrick won the 800 (2:07.53), and Landon Fry won the 3200 (10:42.87).

Bowling Green 5, Archbold 0

Bowling Green swept Archbold, 5-0, at Bowling Green State University’s Keefe Courts Thursday in non-league tennis.

In first singles, Aaron Hershberger defeated Luke Rosebrook, 6-1, 6-1, in second singles Zack Mangan defeated Aron Miller, 6-1, 6-1, and in third singles, Caleb Goff defeated Kyle Hageman, 6-1, 6-1.

In first doubles, Mathias Drumm and Theo Bock defeated Ethan Stuckey and Cameron Yoder, 6-1, 6-0, and BG coach Andy Drumm said the Bobcats’ second doubles team, Jonas Kendrick and Robby Seiffert, fought hard to beat Jesse Nofziger and Jay Riley, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5).

“Jonas Kendrick and Robby Seiffert cruised through the first set 6-1. Kendrick and Seiffert’s serves seemed to go awry in the second set while Nofziger and Riley hit some great volleys and overheads and took the second set 6-4,” coach Drumm said.

“In the third set match tie-break, Kendrick/Seiffert got out to a quick lead with big serves and deft volleys, 7-2. They were able to hold on and win the tie-break with a great volley by Kendrick to the open court, 10-5.”

The win brings Bowling Green to 9-6 on the season.
