Elmwood baseball downs Carey, Riverdale

CAREY — After opening the season with four losses, Elmwood won two straight, defeating Riverdale, 11-3, on Thursday and Carey, 5-1, on Saturday.

Against the Blue Devils, Elmwood pitcher Jimmie Palmer got the win, striking out five, allowing three hits and one earned run in five innings.

Tanner Shaffer closed, striking out one and allowing no hits or runs over one inning.

At the plate, Mason Mossbarger was 1-for-3 with a double, Colton Bradford was 1-for-4 with a double and RBI, Andrew Holland had two base hits in four at-bats, Hayden Wickard had a double and RBI, and Mason Oliver had a base hit and two RBIs.

In Mount Blanchard, Holland got the win against Riverdale, striking out eight and allowing just one hit and one earned run through five innings.

Owen Simmons pitched two innings of relief, striking out three and allowing no hits or runs for the Royals.

At the plate, Mossbarger was 3-for-5 with two singles and a double, Holland had a double and two RBIs, Palmer was 3-for-3, Oliver was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, and Kameron Kingery was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

The Royals outhit Riverdale, 12-1, and Elmwood scored three runs in the third, two in the fifth, one in the sixth, and exploded for five runs in the seventh inning.

Evan Reiter had Riverdale’s only base hit and Gauge King took the loss on the mound, striking out three but allowing seven hits and six earned runs through 5.1 innings.

Lex Weber pitched 1.2 innings in relief, allowing five hits and two earned runs.
