6 Jackets win district, 10 qualify to state

PERRYSBURG — In a Division I district meet that Perrysburg hosted Saturday, the Yellow Jackets had six individual champions and qualified 10 wrestlers to the Division I state meet next weekend.

The Yellow Jackets scored 274 points but finished second to district champion Lakewood St. Edward (328½) in the team standings.

Filling out the top 10 teams were Fremont Ross (83), Ashland (73½), Findlay (63), Toledo Whitmer (62), North Royalton (61), Toledo St. John’s (59), Cleveland St. Ignatius (54½) and Avon Lake (54).

Perrysburg sophomore Marcus Blaze (48-1) won a 120-pound championship with a 21-8 major decision against Clay senior Micah Medina (20-4).

Perrysburg senior Ryan Avalos (36-2) won a 126-pound title with a 3-0 decision over St. Edward sophomore Joseph Sanderfer (26-9).

Perrysburg senior Wynton Denkins (47-2) won 8-3 over St. Edward sophomore Lucan O’Brien (28-11) to win a 150-pound title.

Perrysburg junior Jake Wood (37-5) won the 157-pound championship with a 7-2 decision against Ashland senior Jon Metzger (40-10).

At 165, undefeated Perrysburg senior Joey Blaze (40-0) won 3-0 in the title bout over St. Edward sophomore Tyrel Miller (31-8).

At 175, Perrysburg senior Myles Takats (47-2) defeated St. Edward sophomore Jarrel Miller (28-6) by a 5-3 championship decision.

Perrysburg junior Diego Chavez (26-9) placed second at 138 and placing third were Perrysburg freshman Ayden Dodd (38-8) at 106 and sophomore Cole Evans (29-6) at 132.

Perrysburg senior A.J. Parish (25-6) placed fourth at 144. The top four placers are automatic qualifiers to the state meet.

Placing fifth were Perrysburg freshman Alex Denkins (36-11) at 113 and senior Nick Hartzell (37-7) at 190, which will qualify them as alternates to state if another wrestler cannot participate.

The state tournament is Thursday through Saturday, March 10-12, at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus.

Wilson, Burch district runner-up

NORWALK — In the D-II districts at Norwalk High School, both Bowling Green and Rossford had one wrestler qualify for the state meet.

BG finished in 16th place with 36 points and Rossford was 26th with 20 points. Wauseon (200½) won the team title, followed by Columbus St. Francis DeSales (194½), Ontario (132½), and Clyde (90).

Rossford junior Ayden Wilson (34-7) finished as district runner-up at 157 pounds and BG senior Dominick Burch (43-5) was runner-up at 285.

Wilcox, Quaintance district runner-up

ROSSFORD — In the D-III district meet at Rossford High School, Lakota, Elmwood and Otsego advanced one wrestler apiece to the state tournament.

Lakota scored 81 points in the team standings to place behind champion Archbold (148½), Milan Edison (114½), Oak Harbor (110), Monroeville (109½), Tinora (108), Delta (107½), Liberty Center (104), and Ayersville (83).

Genoa was 10th with 76 points, Otsego scored 42 points to place 15th, Elmwood followed with 41 points, Lake was tied for 22nd with 26 points and Eastwood scored six points to finish in 36th.

Otsego junior Trevor Wilcox (36-5) finished as district runner-up at 120 and Lakota sophomore Braxton Quaintance (37-9) was runner-up at 165.

Elmwood senior Cannon Endicott (38-3) qualified to state, finishing in third at 175 pounds.

Finishing in fifth were Lake junior Vince Barton (35-12) at 126 pounds, Otsego senior Lee Borders (38-7) at 150, Lakota sophomore Grant Bomer (32-18) at 138, and Lakota junior Gabe Garlick (31-15). They will serve as alternates.

Placing sixth were Lakota sophomore Lane Thacker (38-15) at 126 and classmate Cody Biddle (35-16) at 144 and Lakota senior Jon Rosas (30-18) at 190.
