TOLEDO — Lourdes University tennis opened up the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference portion of its schedule on Saturday afternoon, falling 7-0 to Cornerstone inside Shadow Valley Tennis Club.

Jordan Bucher (North Baltimore) is a starting member of the Gray Wolves club, but she fell in both singles and doubles competition Saturday.

“The outcome was less than favorable, however, today provided an opportunity to see the Xs and Os in three dimensions and in real time,” head coach Epifani Jones said.

The Gray Wolves’ top doubles team of Cleo Moore (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood International) and Bella Chela (Lusaka, Zambia/Pretoria) forced a tie-break in their match before falling 7-6 (4).

“Bella and Cleo’s loss was painful after having match point, but they clearly see they can compete at a higher level and that should be encouraging,” Jones added.

Olivia Schoppa (Gutersloh/Stadtisches Gymnaskum Gutersloh) and Laura Ortiz (Bogota, Columbia/Gimnasio Los Pinos) fell 6-2 at second doubles while Mallory Schardt (Bedford, Mich.) and Bucher suffered a 6-1 setback at the third spot.

In singles play, Cornerstone (3-2, 1-0 WHAC) won all six matches in straight sets. Schardt fell 6-0, 6-2 at the top of the lineup while Chela dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision at number two singles while Schoppa lost by the same score at fourth singles.

At the third spot, Moore dropped a 6-2, 6-0 match and Ortiz suffered a 6-0, 6-1 setback at number five. Bucher rounded out the lineup at number six singles, falling 6-0, 6-0.

Lourdes (1-4, 0-1) returns to the court on March 7 as the Gray Wolves host Indiana Tech. First serve is set for 11:30 a.m. at Shadow Valley.
