Prep Roundup: Schultz leads Perrysburg into district tourney

GENOA — Austin Shultz hit three 3-point goals and scored a team-high 16 points to lead Perrysburg to a 69-36 Division I tournament victory against Clay Friday.

Perrysburg opened on a 19-4 run and led 39-10 by halftime.

Gavin Fenneken scored 11, Matt Hubbard scored nine, Andrew Hunt scored eight, Matt Watkins scored seven, Joe Dynda scored six, Matt McEwen and Avery Hunt scored five apiece and Carter Petteys added two points for the Yellow Jackets.

The Yellow Jackets had just three turnovers, made six shots from behind the arc, and were 6-for-13 from the free throw line.

Lucas Jeremy led Clay with 11 points, Mason Heintschel scored seven, Evin Baker scored six, Ben Roberts and Luke Measel scored four apiece, and Marcus Rahm and Hudson Byers added two points apiece for the Eagles.

The Yellow Jackets, now 18-5, advance to the district semifinals to take on Toledo St. Francis (14-9) at 6 p.m. at Lake High School on Tuesday.

The winner takes on the Lima Senior (16-7)-Bowling Green (11-12) winner in the district final at Lake on Friday, March 3 at 7 p.m.

Rossford 32, Maumee 20

WHITEHOUSE — Rossford survived a threat from Maumee to win a Division II tournament game, 32-20, at Anthony Wayne’s Dick Albaugh Physical Education Center Friday.

Brenden Revels, a 6-4 senior guard, was 6-for-10 from the field in leading Rossford with 13 points and 6-foot-10 senior Derek Vorst, an Indiana State University signee, had 11 points, eight rebounds and two assists for the Bulldogs.

Jake Morrison had six points and five rebounds, Brandon Swope scored two points and Garette Murphree had two steals for Rossford.

The Bulldogs opened an 11-4 first quarter lead, but the Panthers battled back, trailing just 15-11 at the half. Rossford closed on an 11-5 run to put the game away.

Rossford shot 47% (15-for-32) from the floor but made just one out of 10 shots from the arc and also made their only free throw attempt in a game that saw just two free throws shot, combined by both teams.

Maumee was 9-for-26 (35%) from the field, including 2-for-13 (15%) from the arc. The Bulldogs missed their only free throw attempt.

Rossford had a 22-11 advantage off the boards and the Bulldogs had seven turnovers to the Panthers’ six.

Kyle Arndt led Maumee (6-18) with nine points and four rebounds, Jayvon Hutchinson had four points and three steals, Ayden McCarthy scored four points, and Jaden Walker scored three points.

The Bulldogs (19-4) advance to take on Wauseon (15-7), which defeated the Bulldogs, 53-41, during the regular season.

The Bulldogs and Indians will face off in a district semifinal next Thursday at 6 p.m. at Lake High School. The Indians downed Toledo Woodward (4-17), 68-50, Friday to advance.

The semifinal winner takes on the Toledo Central Catholic (19-4)-Port Clinton (14-10) winner at 7 p.m. in the district final at Lake Saturday.

Ottawa-Glandorf 71, Elmwood 29

ELIDA — Elmwood saw its season end at the hands of the Division III state runner-up and this season’s top-ranked team, Ottawa-Glandorf, in tournament action Friday.

Elmwood finishes at 7-17 while O-G, the Western Buckeye League champions, advance with a 20-3 record.

Hunter Stechschulte scored 18, Caden Erford scored 16 and Colin White scored 12 to lead the Titans.

The Titans led 17-4 after one quarter, but outscored the Royals by just two in the second quarter, 14-12, to grab a 31-16 halftime lead. O-G put up 32 third quarter points to begin pulling away.

Kade Lentz scored 19, including two three-point goals, to lead Elmwood, Hayden Wickard had eight points, four rebounds and four assists, and Evan Barringer scored two points for the Royals.

Theo Maag scored six, Brad Maag, Levi Unterbrink, and Dave Westrick scored four points each for the Titans, Grant Schroeder scored three points, and Ty Buckland and Grady Toumazos scored two points each.

Toledo Rogers 56, Otsego 44

TOLEDO — Jack Simpson scored 13 points, but it was not enough as Otsego boys basketball saw its season end Tuesday 56-44, in the Division II tournament by Rogers at E.L. Bowsher High School.

Otsego ends its season with a 9-14 record. Rogers (6-17) advanced, only to lose to Toledo Central Catholic, 49-36, on Friday.

Rogers led Otsego by just one, 12-11, after one quarter, but outscored the Knights 19-9 in the second to grab a 31-20 halftime lead. The Rams opened the second half on a 17-7 run.

Lavelle Bebley led Rogers with 20 points, Traden Booker scored 10, KiJyere McAlister scored nine, Shawn Coleman scored seven, Aaron Watson scored six, and Lamer Williams added three points.

For Otsego, which had 19 turnovers, Owen Weaver had two three-point goals and scored nine points, Cohen Feehan scored six, Tanner Balusik scored five, Drew Gase scored four, Owen Atkinson scored three, and Carter Lampe and Trey Studer scored two points apiece.
