Residents return to homes after gas leak in BG

Construction workers hit a gas line this morning, causing the evacuation of a small number of homes.

As Speer Brothers continued its road work on Haskins Road, workers struck a gas line around 8:45 a.m., said Municipal Administrator Lori Tretter.

Columbia Gas responded and repaired the gas line, she said.

Residents in the immediate vicinity of Haskins Road and West Wooster Street were asked to leave their homes and were offered the opportunity to go to Wood County Hospital if they needed a place to stay, Tretter said.

Members of the Bowling Green Fire Division went door to door alerting residents of the leak, she said.

Tretter said she didn’t know if anyone took advantage of that offer as the evacuation area was small.

Residents were able to their homes shortly after 11 a.m.

Wednesday’s wind helped disperse the fumes.

The area of Parker and Vine streets may experience temporary gas service interruptions, and Columbia Gas will connect homeowners who need their gas reconnected, Tretter said.
