US 20 shopping center street changes will allow for better plowing

LIME CITY — The Perrysburg Township Trustees have begun the process for dedicating several shopping center streets in the area of U.S. 20 as public streets.

During the Feb. 1 meeting, they entered into a contract for $49,365 with Proudfoot and Associates to perform the engineering services necessary to start the changes.

“We’re getting it done because, over the years, we’ve had a lot of complaints about South Compass and Market Center not getting plowed properly and people have been under the impression that these are already township roads, and they aren’t. They’re private,” Jon Eckel, township administrator, said.

There will be three sections of road that will change ownership when the process is complete: South Compass Drive, between Simmons Road and Route 20; Market Center Drive, between Miller Road and the west end of Chick-fil-A; and Market Center Drive between Simmons and Thompson roads.

Eckel described the location of South Compass as being just south of Walmart and the sections of Market Center Drive as the road that runs behind Walgreens and in front of Hobby Lobby.

“It will be our expense and responsibility to maintain the roads, but we’re doing it for our citizens to maintain the roads and plow the roads according to our standards. It will alleviate the issue that we have every winter,” Eckel said. “There’s a small portion of Market Center Drive that is already owned by the township, so in essence, our plows will already be there when it snows. Now they will just be allowed to complete the job.”

Eckel said that he has been working with Wood County Engineer John Musteric to get the process moving. Proudfoot will perform the required surveys, taking care of the title search and submitting the drawings.

“It’s quite a lot of work. John Musteric has really gone the extra mile to make this an easier process,” Eckel said. “When this is complete we will be able to provide the kind of services that have been expected by our residents.”

“This should have been done years ago,” Trustee Gary Britten said.

In other road-related business, the trustees approved the public announcement to take letters of interest in a proposed asphalt paving project to extend the width and add 2-foot-wide berms, where none exists, of 5.74 miles of Five Point Road that is within the township.

In other business, three permits were issued by planning and zoning:

Jan. 11, Wesley Bergman, 9556 Deimling Road, for the installation of a new asphalt driveway.

Jan. 17, Mike and Vanessa Born, 26172 Carronade Drive, for a 144-foot-long split rail fence with gates.

Jan. 23, Pamela Rudolph, 30267 Hickory Hill Drive, for a new single-family residential dwelling with attached garage.
