Kayla Davis paces Falcons at Florida Classic

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – The Bowling Green State University women’s golf team placed seventh at its Falcon Florida Classic. The 12-team event was held at the par-72, 6,069-yard course at the Royal Lakes Golf Course.

Kayla Davis paced the Falcons, finishing tied for No. 11 at one-over-par. Davis started the day plus four and shot a three under par in the final round.

Her 69 on Tuesday was tied for the third-best score of round three. Davis also was tied for seventh in the tournament with 37 pars. She also shot even for the tournament on the par-4 holes. She shot 74 during both of the first two rounds for a final score of 217.

Olivia Steen (76-72-76-224) finished tied for No. 25 at eight over. Emily Nystrom (71-74-82-227) finished tied for 40th at 11 over, Savannah Wyrick (79-81-75-235) placed tied for 57th at 19 over and Alyson Kovach (79-78-79-236) rounds out the BGSU lineup tied for 61st at 20 over.

“We had a solid showing for the first event of the spring,” BGSU coach Erin Fahey said. “The team fought hard to improve each round. Huge shout-out to Emily Nystrom and Kayla Davis for shooting rounds this week under par.”

BGSU also had two Falcons play as individuals. Averi Mickelson (75-79-78-232) finished tied for 50th at 16 over, while Amanda Maletich placed 56th (77-78-79-234) at plus-18.

Northern Illinois was 14-under-par as a team, winning the championship, Idaho at four under was second and Toledo was third at plus three. Idaho is coached by former BGSU coach Stephanie Young.

The rest of the team field included Illinois State (+6), Western Michigan (+19), Central Michigan (+25), Bowling Green (+33), Ball State (+34), Western Illinois (+40), Eastern Michigan (+42), Akron (+48), and Ohio (+50).

The Falcons return to action Feb. 24-26 at Western Michigan’s Rio Verde Invitational in Rio Verde, Arizona.
