BGSU tennis drops two matches in Indy

INDIANAPOLIS – The Bowling Green State University tennis team dropped a hard-fought Friday match to the Indianapolis Greyhounds by a score of 4-3. The Greyhounds start the year 1-0.

BGSU started the day by picking up the doubles point, with the pairing of Lucy Furness and Hannah Neuman winning, 6-4, at the No. 1 spot. With the victory, the duo improves to 3-0 on the season.

In the No. 2 spot, Eloise Saraty and Maru Poppe won, 6-3, in their first time competing together.

Neuman carried the success over to singles, where she earned a 6-2, 6-4 win in the No. 4 position. The victory moves her to 2-1 in singles this season. Also competing for the Falcons was Diana Ivanikhina, who made her collegiate debut.

In singles, Anna Novikova (UIndy) defeated Saraty, 7-5, 7-5, Maissane Aik (UIndy) defeated Furness, 6-2, 6-4, and Maria Fiacan (UIndy) defeated Poppe, 6-4, 6-0

Neuman defeated Lea Cakarevic, Aimee Reynoso (UIndy) defeated Ivanikhina, 6-3, 6-0, and Leticia Fonseca (BGSU) win by default.

In doubles, Furness and Neuman defeated Novikova and Fiacan (UIndy), 6-4, Saraty and Poppe defeated Cakarevic and Aik, 6-3 and Fonseca and Ivanikhina (BGSU) won by default.

On Saturday, BGSU lost to Butler, their second contest of the weekend. The Bulldogs swept the doubles round to start the day, then secured five of the six singles matches to earn the 6-1 victory.

Furness tallied a win for the Falcons at No. 2 singles, her second victory of the spring. Saraty and Fonseca both battled to three sets before falling at No. 1 and No. 5, respectively. With the loss, BGSU drops to 1-3 on the season. Butler improves to 1-3.

In singles, Natalie Boesing (Butler) defeated Saraty, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, Furness defeated Chase Metcalf (Butler), 7-5, 7-5, and Delaney Schurhamer (Butler) defeated Poppe, 6-1, 6-2

Norah Balthazor (Butler) defeated Neuman, 6-1, 6-4, Katie Beavin (Butler) defeated Fonseca, 1-6, 6-3, 10-2, and Emma Beavin (Butler) defeated Ivanikhina, 6-3, 6-4

In doubles Boesing and Metcalf (Butler) defeated Furness and Neuman, 6-0, Schurhamer and Veronika Bruetting (Butler) defeated Saraty and Poppe, 6-3, and Balthazor and Jordan Schildcrout (Butler) defeated Fonseca and Ivanikhina, 6-0

The Falcons continue non-conference with the 2023 home opener. Bowling Green hosts Cleveland State at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3, in the Perrysburg Tennis Center.

After a day off, BGSU heads to East Lansing for a Sunday (Feb. 5) showdown with Michigan State. First serve between the Falcons and Spartans is slated for 2 p.m.
