Prep Roundup: Stout leads Golden Bears past Elmwood

BLOOMDALE — In non-league girls basketball Wednesday, Gibsonburg defeated Elmwood, 56-34, behind a 20-point effort from Ellie Stout.

For Elmwood, Anna Meyer had 11 points, two three-point goals and four assists and Cara Frank had a double-double 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Madi Lee scored three points, McKenzie Laird had two points and eight rebounds, and Allyie Reynolds, Aubrey Johnson, Kate Keiffer and Brynn Laugherty scored two points each for Elmwood. Riley Daniels had four assists.

The Royals had 31 rebounds, 13 turnovers, were 8-for-25 inside the arc, 2-for-17 outside the arc, and made 12-of-16 free throws.

For Gibsonburg, Sam Deininger scored 15, Jenna Bloomfield and Jazmyne Morant scored seven apiece, Harley Gamble scored four points, and Sophia Simmons added three points.

Gibsonburg improves to 10-5 while Elmwood falls to 7-8.

Soccer officials needed

Officials in all sports are needed, but to become a soccer official, a candidate starts with becoming an USSF Certified Official.

To become a youth soccer referee for 2022-23, one must take the following courses.

● Introduction to Safe and Healthy Playing Environments – 1 hour

● SafeSport (if 18 years or older) – 1 hour

● Online Grassroots Referee Course Module – 4.5 hours

● First Time Grassroots Referee Quiz – 45 minutes

● U.S. Soccer Federation Gold Standard NCSI Background Check (if 18 years or older)

A candidate can navigate the U.S. Soccer Learning Center at https://learning.ussoccer.com. The U.S. Soccer Learning Center is a state-of-the art online educational platform.

It allows coaches to create a personal profile, register for courses, communicate with technical staff, take part in online courses, create session plans with an online graphics tool, access an archive of U.S. Soccer training sessions and much more.

● Create a login. (save username and password – you will use it in the future)

● Ages 13-17: provide a parent email address

● After account is set up, click on Register for a Course

● Click on Grassroots First Time Referee

● Click on Go to Course List

● Select 2023 OHN New Grassroots Referee (date) Toledo

The final step includes attending one three-hour training session. The first one is Saturday from 1-4 p.m. at the Pacesetter Indoor Facility, 5400 Central Ave., Toledo.

The second one is Feb. 18 from 9 a.m.-noon at the Bowling Green State University Perry Field House, 601 N. Mercer Road. The third one is at Pacesetter on March 4 from 4-7 p.m.
