Prep roundup: Murphree hits 4 treys to lead Bulldogs

BLOOMDALE — Rossford opened on a 12-1 run and then held on to defeat Elmwood, 39-27, in Northern Buckeye Conference boys basketball action Wednesday.

It was Elmwood’s season opener, while Rossford improves to 5-1 overall and stays unbeaten in the NBC at 3-0.

Rossford put three players into double figures, led by Garette Murphree with 12 points on four three-point goals, Jake Morrison scored 11 points, and Brenden Revels added 10 points.

Derek Vorst scored four points and Brandon Swope added two points for the Bulldogs.

Kade Lentz scored a game-high 14 points to lead the Royals, plus he had seven rebounds and two steals.

Hayden Wickard had four points and six rebounds, Andrew Traxler and Zach May scored three apiece, Lucas Barringer scored two points, Landry Seedorf added one point and Jackson Childress had three assists for the Royals.

Fostoria 60, Eastwood 31

PEMBERVILLE — Fostoria put three players into double figures in downing host Eastwood, 60-31, in Northern Buckeye Conference girls basketball Tuesday.

Lyrique Johnson scored 19, Alycia Middlebrooks scored 16 and Garyana Overton added 14 points to lead the Redmen, who are 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the conference.

Fostoria shot 47% (21-for-45) from inside the arc, and made 5-of-14 (36%) three-point shots. Overall, the Redmen shot 44% (26-fo0r-59) from the field.

Middlebrooks was 4-for-8 from beyond the arc and L Johnson was 9-for-14 from inside the arc and Overton was 6-for-12. Jenna Johnson scored six points to round out Fostoria’s scoring.

Eastwood, which falls to 4-3 and 3-2, was led by Kayla Buehler, who scored 16 points,

The Eagles were 9-for-38 from the inside the arc, and 2-for-15 from outside the arc, and made 7-of-15 free throws.

Eastwood also got four points apiece from Amelia Ward and Kyrie Henline, Saylor King scored three points and Brogan Weaver scored two points.

Rossford 42, Otsego 38

TONTOGANY — In a Northern Buckeye Conference wrestling dual meet Wednesday, visiting Rossford narrowly defeated Otsego, 42-38.

Rossford’s Logan Bieganowski pinned Otsego’s Diego Henderson in 5:06 at 215 pounds.

For the Bulldogs, Caleb Beckwith (106), Andrew Frankforther (113), Caleb Campbell (120), Ayden Wilson (157), Brock Queen (175), and Grant Eckel (190) won by forfeit.

Otsego wrestler Owen Kasza pinned Rossford’s Aiden Farrell in 48 seconds at 126 pounds.

Otsego’s Trevor Wilcox pinned Ronnie Hawkins in 1:36 at 132 pounds, and Otsego’s Caeden Henderson won a 13-1 major decision over Rossford’s Joe Foels at 144.

Otsego’s Lee Borders pinned Dylan Eckhardt in 26 seconds at 150 pounds, and Otsego’s Brayden Sadler won a 12-2 major decision against Ryan Weisbrod.

At 285, Otsego’s Adolfo Martinez-Alba pinned Avontae Jackson in two minutes.

Rossford bowlers improve to 4-0

ROSSFORD — The Rossford boys bowling team improved to 4-0 with a 2,442-2,033 win over Bluffton at Interstate Lanes Tuesday.

For the Bulldogs, Quintan Borden (212 average) bowled 199-226-425 and Ethan Jones (184) bowled 188-180-368.

The Rossford girls fell to 1-2 on Monday, losing to Wauseon 2,289-1,919 at River City Bowl-Away.

For the Bulldogs, Cydnee Baney (173) bowled 171-176-347 and Kaitlyn Dewey (162) bowled 172-153-325.

BG swimmers 1-3 at Oak Harbor

OAK HARBOR — The Bowling Green boys swimming team defeated Pickerington Central, 76-55, while the BG girls team lost to Pickerington Central, 98-81.

In the same meet at the Oak Harbor High School pool on Saturday, the BG boys lost to Oak Harbor, 119-44, and the BG girls fell to the Rockets, 106-59.

Eastwood also competed in the meet but did not register a team score. The swimmers competed together in individual events, but results were separated out into dual meet scores.

Oak Harbor won 21 of 24 individual events, including all of the relay events.

BG junior Alex Xu won the 50-yard freestyle, finishing in 23.44 to narrowly defeat second place Oak Harbor senior Keegan Witt (24.13).

Eastwood sophomore Eric Sander won the 500 freestyle, finishing in 5;26.12 to defeat second place Xu (5:33.78).

In the girls meet, BG senior Maddy Desmond won the 500 freestyle, finishing in 6:00.33 to defeat Pickerington Central junior Carlie McClurg (6:10.95).

Rossford’s Shaffer earns All-Ohio honors

SYLVANIA — Lourdes University’s Chloe Shaffer, a Rossford resident who went to Toledo Central Catholic, was selected to the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association Academic All-Ohio Team.

Shaffer joines Lourdes teammates Karlie Heilman (Warren Harding) and Abigail Mann (Sylvania Southview H.S.). Heilman was NCAA Division II/NAIA All-Ohio and Mann was Academic All-Ohio.

Shaffer started all 18 contests for the Gray Wolves as a senior. The forward led the team in scoring in 2022 with four goals, including two match-winners, and three assists for 11 total points.

Shaffer concluded her career with a school-record 17 goals and 41 total points. She carries a 3.49 cumulative grade point average as a criminal justice major.
