Focus on food and exploring at the library

Your library is a community space where people of every age are invited to explore and discover more about themselves, each other, and the world around them.

The Wood County District Public has created a variety of these learning and experience-based opportunities throughout the library. For every age and for every interest, there’s something to explore and discover.

For kids and families, our Children’s Place has an Interactive Learning Room that changes each month. This room is set up for reading and hands-on discovery with topics like dinosaurs, animal science, and food and nutrition. This month, kids will be invited to serve meals from a food truck and prepare healthy food with a play kitchen. These activities help children recognize colors, shapes, letters, and numbers, while also helping kids develop rich vocabularies to describe their experiences at the library. In December, watch for the upcoming Lego activity.

Adults can have plenty of fun while exploring the library, too. Through Nov. 28, adults are invited to find a recipe from a friend or neighbor in the historical recipe collection in the Local History Collection. You may even find your next favorite holiday dish, like Mrs. Ruby Smithers’ Banana Upside-down Cake listed in the 1956 Wood County Fair prizewinners’ cookbook. Adults can also hunt for book covers in downtown Bowling Green while doing their holiday shopping for a chance to win BG Downtown Dollars with our Book Cover Hunt from Nov. 17-Dec. 2. Simply pick up a sheet of clues at the library, find the corresponding book covers in the windows of downtown businesses, and turn in answers to be entered into a drawing.

Patrons of all ages are also welcome to explore or collection of items in the Library of Things. In this collection, you’ll find technology like microscopes and DVD players, home improvement items like stud finders and thermal imaging cameras, and fun for the whole family like giant games and a karaoke machine. Families can also check out a STEAM Kit for hands-on learning about topics like animals, yoga, dinosaurs, emotions, construction, spelling, design and more from our Children’s Place.

There’s plenty to explore and do at your library. Bring yourself or your whole family for events, displays, and materials built for learning and fun. For more information about these and upcoming events, visit our website at wcdpl.org/events.
