Wild Skills: Primitive Fire-Starting will be held tonight from 6:30-8 at W.W. Knight Nature Preserve, 29530 White Road, Perrysburg. The ability to create fire is arguably the most important discovery in human history. Try using the bow-drill, pump-drill and flint and steel to start fires, much like the first people who called Ohio home hundreds and thousands of years ago.
Project Feederwatch is set for Saturday from 10-11:30 p.m. at W.W. Knight Nature Preserve. Join citizen scientists around the world to count wintering birds. A presentation about how to identify and count the birds will be followed by a practice session at the feeders.
Knitting for Kids will be held Saturday from 10 a.m.-noon at Carter Historic Farm, 18331 Carter Road. Children will be taught the basics of knitting and learn how to make a scarf. Improve hand-eye coordination, gain a sense of accomplishment through crafts, connect with their past and develop a new hobby. Knitting needles and yarn will be included. Snacks will be provided.
A Thanksgiving Food Drive will be held Nov. 12-19 at Carter Historic Farm. Drop off nonperishable food items throughout the week and they will be donated to the Brown Bag Food Project. Donation locations include Carter Historic Farm, W.W. Knight Nature Preserve, Otsego Park and park district headquarters. No registration is needed.
Homeschoolers: Rock Detectives will be held Nov. 15 from 10 a.m.-noon at Sawyer Quarry Nature Preserve, 26940 Lime City Road, Perrysburg. Designed for homeschoolers 6 years old and older, to learn about Ohio’s geologic history. Learn how to test the different properties of rocks to tell them apart. Parents must stay with the group.
Seed Cleaning: Luau (volunteer) will be held Nov. 16 from 6-8 p.m. at J.C. Reuthinger Memorial Preserve. Help clean native plant seeds that have been harvested from Park District properties. This is an indoor, sit-down activity. All instruction and materials provided. Wear summer garb.
Composting 101 is set for Nov. 16 from 6-7 p.m. at Carter Historic Farm. Learn how to recycle food waste, leaves and yard waste and turn it into a valuable resource for the garden.
Wild Skills: Bow-drill Workshop will be held Nov. 17 from 6-8 p.m. at W.W. Knight Nature Preserve. Build and test a primitive bow-drill fire-starting kit. Prepare for a substantial amount of wood whittling. Bring a wood-working knife or call ahead to reserve one. Wood provided. Cost is $5.
Art in Park: Holiday Centerpieces will be held Nov. 17 from 7-9 p.m. at W.W. Knight Nature Preserve. Use dried plants to create a centerpiece for your holiday table. Cost is $10.
Cranberry-Apple Chutney is set for Nov. 19 from 10 a.m.-noon at Carter Historic Farm. Learn canning basics while making a seasonal chutney, then take a jar home to share with family. For ages 13+.
Intermediate Orienteering will be held Nov. 19 from 12:30-4:30 p.m. at Bradner Preserve Nature Center, 11491 Fostoria Road. Looking to build on compass skills? We will introduce map reading, pacing and route planning indoors, and then try out a challenge course spread through the park. Prior orienteering experience is great, but not required. Dress for extensive off trail trekking through rough vegetation and wet areas.
