Wood Lane residential sites offer volunteer opportunities

To the Editor:
Sometimes the thing we value most in life are the things that not everyone has access to. With college
students coming back for the fall semester they may be looking for something to do to give back to the
community. Volunteering with Wood Lane Residential Services is a great way to give back to the
community. WLRS is a non profit organization that provides homes to adults with intellectual
disabilities. While they have staff to provide the things they need everyday and ensure their health and
welfare, community friends are always welcome. There is a place for everyone at WLRS, volunteers can do
anything from enjoying a movie and popcorn with a resident to playing board games, building model cars,
painting a lady’s fingernails or doing her hair. Volunteers can also come to just be a friend: talk,
listen, laugh and maybe even cry. The relationships built may become some of the most valued
relationships for all involved. There are also other ways to help out even if time constraints prevent
it from becoming a regular place to be. There are often flower beds that need tended to, yards that need
cleaned up or garages that need cleaned out. The people we serve at WLRS often times teach people
lessons in life that they would otherwise not have the opportunity to learn. If you would like to become
a community friend please contact Marte Sorg at 419-353-9577.
