Save money by unplugging, insulating and gardening

PERRYSBURG – Visitors to Eric Scott’s home shouldn’t be surprised that all of the clocks are blinking.

It isn’t because the electricity is perpetually out. It’s because Scott, who is a stewardship specialist
for the Wood County Park District, likes to save electricity.
"A lot of times you leave things plugged in … they call it phantom electricity," he said.
"Would you rather reset clocks or pay higher bills?"
Scott gave a presentation on green living last month at the Reuthinger Preserve off Oregon Road.
"Times are getting tough," he said, "and as a community leader, we felt we should put
together a program to save money."
To save on heating costs, insulate the roof and attic to prevent warm air from escaping. To prevent cold
air from coming in the home, check dryer vents, outdoor faucets and the crawl space.
Toledoan Barb Misko, who was at the program, said she insulated her former home in Findlay and could
attest to the savings.
"We insulated and it really made a difference. It cut that budget in half," she said.
Scott’s tips not only save money, but save the environment.
