‘Mary Poppins’ workshops set
Two theater workshops for children ages 4 – 11 are coming up in conjunction with the BGHS All-School
musical “Mary Poppins.”
The first workshop, sponsored by the All-School Musical, is called “A Jolly Holiday with Bert and Mary”
and will take place on April 12 from 10 to 11:15 a.m. in the Performing Arts Center lobby. Children will
make mini-kites, have tea with Mary and Bert, learn steps from a dance in the production, and act out
stories with characters from the show.
The second workshop, sponsored by the Drama Club, is called “Creative Dramatics and Backstage Tour.” This
workshop will take place on April 27 from 1 to 2:15 p.m. prior to the Sunday matinee in the Middle
School Cafeteria. During this workshop, children will play theater games with cast members, interpret
scenes from the stories of “Mary Poppins,” and take a backstage tour to learn how actors fly and magic
happens. Parents are invited to join their children in the backstage tour.
The cost for each workshop is $10. Pre-registrations are appreciated but walk-in registrants are welcome.
For more information and to register, email the production’s director Dr. Jo Beth Gonzalez at

Weaving and Wool welcomes spring at historical center
A new Story Walk provides a fun tour for children as they walk the grounds of the Wood County Historical
Center.
Story Walk is an outdoor family literacy activity featuring the book “Warm as Wool,” by Scott Russell
Sanders and illustrated by Helen Cogancherry.
As children walk the short trail to the log cabin, they can stop and read pages from this children’s book
about the first pioneer woman to own sheep in Randolph Township, Portage County, and the hardships faced
by Ohio’s early settlers.
“Warm as Wool” shows an inspiring appreciation for the vital and unsung role women have played in local
history. The StoryWalk Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vt., and developed in
collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg Hubbard Library.
Copies of the book are available for purchase inside the museum gift shop.
The book “Warm as Wool” was selected in conjunction with the Wood County Historical Center’s “Spin Into
Spring” opening on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. This will also highlight the opening of an historic log
cabin, fully restored and functional with members of the Black Swamp Spinners Guild spinning and weaving
on a refurbished “fanny model” loom.
For more information visit woodcountyhistory.org. The Wood County Historical Center is located at 13660
County Home Road. Outdoor events are free.

Soar & Explore at the zoo
TOLEDO — Ever since humans watched the first birds take wing, flight has been a fascination. “Soar
& Explore,” April 5-6 at the Toledo Zoo, digs into the science and fun of this amazing
adaptation, from raptor demonstrations to rocket science. MetroPCS is the supporting sponsor.
Master kite-flying demonstrations, in the zoo’s expansive Africa exhibit, are just the start. Fun takes
flight all across the zoo, from bird feeds and enrichment to hands-on, kid-friendly activities in
Nature’s Neighborhood.
Daily live animal shows in the Museum of Science take visitors closer to the training and adaptations of
some animals.
