Lois Jean Chase

Lois Jean Chase, 80, passed peacefully on March 5 in Venice, Florida.
Jean and husband, Dr. Don Chase, lived in Bowling Green from 1970 to 1995.
Jean was born August 24, 1933 in Milan, Ohio.
She lived an extraordinary career as a professional dancer and teacher: she and her three dancing sisters
were known as The Stower Sisters, performing throughout Ohio and the USA from the 1930s to 1960s.
Jean graduated from Milan High School in 1952, and married Don Chase of Sandusky on May 2, 1953. Starting
their family in Milan they enjoyed many adventures raising and showing Shetland ponies and Poodles,
while Jean ran her dance studio and taught Physical Education at St. Paul’s High School in Norwalk.
They moved to Michigan in 1968. While her husband pursued his Master’s and Ph.D at Michigan State
University, Jean taught Physical Education at a Catholic high school in Lansing. She attended MSU,
taught gymnastics, and enjoyed the academic life and friendships at Michigan State. They spent a year on
the beach in Santa Barbara, CA that Jean treasured.
As Don began his career at BGSU in 1970, she raised her daughters and worked as an Assistant Recreation
Director for the city of Bowling Green, where she ran the recreation programs for girls in tennis,
softball, basketball, gymnastics, and the City Recreation summer program. She was involved in the
faculty’s women’s club, tennis and paddleball leagues, Women’s Aglow, and the BG Garden Club, while
always an enthusiastic fan of BGHS and BGSU sports.
Jean loved people! The highlight of her life was her grandchildren and many friends she reached out to
all over the USA. She enjoyed the ‘snowbird’ life traveling in their motor home, spending winters in
Venice, Florida and summers in the north with family, entertaining, meeting new people, and going to the
beach.
Surviving Jean is her husband of 60 years, Don Chase of North Port, Florida; her daughters Meagan of
Pittsburgh, PA and Melissa of Oxford, OH; her four grandchildren; and two sisters, Carol Langer and Ruth
Kromer, both of northwestern Ohio.
Private services will be held with family.
Considerations for memorial contributions could be directed to: The Donald J. Chase Scholarship fund at
BGSU.
