‘Comfort bears’ help grieving parents

Kelly Gerken has a mission: to comfort mothers and families who, like her, have lost children in
Gerken’s organization, Sufficient Grace Ministries, teamed with Bowling Green State University’s Alpha
Sigma Phi fraternity on Wednesday to help build “comfort bears” for grieving parents.
“It was just a beautiful event,” said Gerken, of Deshler. “Obviously, we really appreciate it. It will
help many of our families.”
The Build-A-Bear for Moms event created 75 comfort bears and raised $1,700 for the organization.
Gerken herself lost three infant children. One set of twin girls was stillborn at 26 weeks in 1996 due to
complications from twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. In 1998 a son was diagnosed with Potter’s Syndrome
in utero, and lived for just six hours after his birth. (Video by J.D. Pooley/Sentinel-Tribune)
