Latta announces winner of Congressional Art Competition
Congressman Bob Latta, R-Bowling Green, announced Jordyn Gears, a student at Woodmore High School, as the
winner of Ohio’s Fifth District 2019 Congressional Art Competition. I
n a ceremony at Owens Community College, Latta also announced that pieces by Elizabeth Steffen of Bowling
Green High School, Brett Fulk of Antwerp High School and Sarah Boice of Ottawa Hills High School were
Honorable Mentions. The winning artwork, Self Portrait, will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol Tunnel for
one year. The three Honorable Mention pieces will be displayed in each of Latta’s district offices.
“We received a record number of artwork submissions this year – 101 pieces of art from students at 23
high schools,” Latta said. “It was incredibly difficult for the judges to decide on the winners from all
the artwork. Congratulations to Jordyn taking the top prize. Her piece, Self Portrait, will be a welcome
addition to the halls of the Capitol. Northwest and west central Ohio is full of incredibly talented
students.”
See planetarium show
“Unworldly Weather,” featuring the most spectacular weather on the Earth and planets, is playing at the
Bowling Green State University Planetarium through Saturday.
The show is “To Shine Almost Forever,” the story of star lives, starts Sunday and runs through April 13.

The planetarium is a 114-seat public science theater serving BGSU students, area schools and the public
of Northwest Ohio. Set under a 40-foot dome, the state-of-the-art SciDome video system fills the dome
with video that can immerse visitor in the cosmos and can show the sky as it would be seen from any
place on the Earth at any time.
Show times are 7:30 p.m. Sundays, 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays, and 2 p.m. on Saturdays.

Every Child Ready to Read: bunny storytime
The Children’s Place of the Wood County District Public Library is offering a storytime and workshop for
babies and toddlers with caregivers on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
Children’s Place staff will share tips from the early literacy initiative Every Child Ready to Read @
Your Library. This early literacy initiative encourages parents and caregivers to talk, sing, read,
write, and play with young children every day to develop critical early literacy skills.
The Children’s Place staff will share bunny stories, songs, activities, conversation, and play. Every
family that attends will receive a paperback copy of Rosemary Wells’ “Read to Your Bunny” book. For more

Tweens, take the challenge
PEMBERVILLE — The Tween Challenge is on at the library, 375 E. Front St., on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
They will take the flip book challenge, an animation project for beginners.
Tween challenges are for students in grades 5-8. Register by calling the library, 419-287-4012. Tweens
will work either individually or as a team to accomplish various tasks based on the theme for the week.

Party with Legos
WALBRIDGE — A Lego Block Party is planned at the library, 108 N. Main St., on Saturday at 2 p.m. Race
against time to make a creation.
Family storytime with stories, fingerplays and songs is set for Monday at 11 a.m.
Play Rigamajig, which is the library’s giant building set, on April 13 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Build a birdhouse at Home Depot
Parents and children can make a birdhouse on Saturday at the Home Depot stores.
Encourage a love for nature and ornithology in this hands-on workshop. Young birdwatchers can observe
birds’ behaviors like nest building and provide them a safe place to eat without the need for expensive
equipment. Once the birdhouse is built, decorate it with paint and stickers.
The Home Depot stores in Bowling Green and Rossford will host the free kids workshop from 9 a.m.-noon.

All kids get to keep their craft and receive a certificate of achievement, a workshop apron and a
commemorative pin, while supplies last.
Legopalooza at the library
Families are invited to the monthly Legopalooza program at the Children’s Place of the Wood County
District Public Library on Sunday from 2-3 p.m.
The library staff will share its Lego collection along with stories and books for creative ideas, as well
as a group building challenge.

Homeschoolers’ Book Talk at Way
PERRYSBURG — Come to Way Public Library, 101 E. Indiana Ave., for a discussion about this month’s book
selection for homeschoolers on Monday at 1:30 p.m.
Children ages 8-12 are invited to discuss “Igraine the Brave” by Cornelia Funke. Igraine dreams of
becoming a famous knight just like her great grandfather, but the truth is, life at the family castle is
rather boring. Until the nephew of the baroness-next-door shows up. He’s got a dastardly plan to capture
the castle and claim as his own the wonderful singing spell books that belong to Igraine’s parents.

Reading Camp-In in Wayne
WAYNE — A Reading Camp-In to celebration National Library Week is planned from Monday from 6-6:45 p.m. at
the library, 137 E. Main St.
Independent readers in first-sixth grades are welcome to read in the dark with their friends. Younger
kids, with an adult to read to them, are also welcome to attend.
A treat will be available for everyone attending. Kids can bring a pillow or bean bag chair if you like.
Bring a flashlight or check out five or more books to receive a free LED flashlight.
Meet robots, learn about owls
WATERVILLE — The library, 800 Michigan Ave., will hold several activities next week.
Meet Dot and Dash and learn about coding and programming with robots on Monday from 6:30-7:30 p.m..
Recommended for children in grades two-five. Registration is required.
A Homeschool STEM Lab is set for Wednesday from 2-3 p.m. Enjoy a monthly program with STEM concepts and
activities geared to ages 4-12. Registration is required.
Who is Calling in the Night? Owls can see in near total darkness, have great hearing, and fly silently
enough to sneak up on a mouse. How do they do that? Explore the owls that live in the Metroparks on
Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Lego League challenges
PERRYSBURG — Children ages 4 and older may come to Way Public Library, 101 E. Indiana Ave., for an
afternoon of building during Lego League on April 11 at 4:15 p.m.
The librarian will give challenges for the kids to complete during the hour-long program. Challenges may
include: build the tallest tower, build the longest bridge or build a maze.
