PERRYSBURG — The third and final Chamber Concert Series, String Quartet, of the Perrysburg Symphony
Orchestra will take place on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Zoar Lutheran Church, 314 Indiana Ave. Travis
Jurgens, music director of the Perrysburg Symphony Orchestra conceived and organized this series.
The program will feature two compositions: Schubert’s String Quartet No.14, known as “Death and the
Maiden” and Haydn’s String Quartet Op.76.
Franz Peter Schubert was born in Vienna, Austria in 1797. He showed an early talent for music and studied
piano and violin under the tutelage of his musician father. He struggled to find his place in the
musical society of the day, but was finally successful.
His compositions reflect the classical and early romantic eras. His String Quartet No. 14 was composed in
1824 during the time his health was noticeably declining. He subsequently died four years later in 1828
at age 31. Although his life was short, he composed voluminous pieces of various types of music
including songs.
This composition consists of four movements: Allegro; Andante con molto; Scherzo Allegro molto; and
Presto. Despite his bad health, abject poverty and suffering from depression, he continued to turn out
tuneful, light compositions for which he is famous.
The second part of the program will be portions of Franz Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet Op. 76 composed by
him in 1797. Haydn was born in 1732 in Rohrau, Austria, and died in 1809 at the age of 77. He was
friends with both Mozart and Beethoven whom he visited in England and Germany.
The String Quarter Op. 76 No. 2 (fifths) includes four parts: Allegro; Andante o piu tosto Allegretto;
Meneutto Allegro ma non troppo; and Vivace assai. Samuel Adler, a composer and educator, has commented
that “this work’s second movement singles out an outstanding example of how to score for stringed
instruments.”
The season finale of the Perrysburg Symphony Orchestra will take place on April 27. The Symphony and the
Perrysburg Junior High School String Ensemble will join to present a Side-by-Side Concert at the
Perrysburg Junior High School at 7:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the door, or
www.perrysburgsymphony.org for $15 for adults and $10 for seniors. Students with identification are
admitted free. The building is handicapped accessible and there is ample parking.
