Weston takes step toward new fire agreement with Plain Township

WESTON — New fire board members were appointed by council Monday, completing the next step toward a new
fire protection agreement with Plain Township.
The details of the agreement were also discussed at the meeting.
The fire board will be made up of the same three members as the Safety Committee: Penny Taylor, Diane
Hillier and Bill Barnhart.
The revised fire protection agreement with Plain Township has been written and will now move to the fire
board for approval. The new yearly rate that Plain Township would pay would be $22,500. The term of the
agreement would be for three years. Previous agreements were for single-year terms.
"That meets everyone’s criteria, it seems. So all the fire districts will get the same amount,"
Mayor Jeremy Schroeder said.
Not every locality in Wood County has its own fire department. Plain Township is one such area and it
receives fire protection from four departments: Washington Township, Central Joint Fire District,
Middleton Township and Weston.
Not all the departments would have been paid the same amount with the previous 2018 agreement, a sticking
point in what was an annual renewal at the end of 2017 that resulted in a temporary agreement with
Weston.
If approved, it would replace the current temporary agreement, which was approved at the Jan. 2 council
meeting. The temporary agreement rate is $1,650 per month.
With Hillier’s election to council, 2018 committee assignments were approved at the Jan. 2 meeting and
are now posted on the village of Weston website at http://westonohio.org/
Committee assignments are as follows:
• Finance/Contracts/Taxes: Shad Kendall, Hillier and Barnhart
• Arts/Education/Parks & Recreation: Hillier, Sarah Easterwood and Greg Stevens
• Cemetery: Easterwood, Taylor and Barnhart
• Safety: Taylor, Hillier and Barnhart
• Streets/Sidewalks/Lands: Barnhart, Kendall and Stevens
• Business/Economic Development: Stevens, Kendall and Easterwood
• Hiring/Personnel Committee: Barnhart, Taylor and Hillier
• Strategic Plan: Barnhart, Kendall and Easterwood
In administrative business, Resolution 2018-1, to enter into an agreement with Cory Kuhlman to act as
solicitor on behalf of the village, received its final reading and was approved unanimously by council.
Ordinance 2018-1 authorizing the mayor and fiscal officer to continue the current agreement with Farmers
& Merchants Bank was approved unanimously as was Ordinance 2018-2 authorizing the mayor and
fiscal officer to continue the current agreement with PNC Bank.
