Bowling Green Women’s Club Garden Group
Garden Group of Bowling Green Women’s Club met March 21 at the home of the hostess for the evening, Linda
Hamilton.
Twelve members were present with two guests, Carol Ballard and Linda Frizzell. Following refreshments,
Hamilton introduced Chris Gajewicz, natural resources coordinator of the Bowling Green Parks and
Recreation Department, who presented a program on herbs used for medicinal purposes. Some examples
included were: dill, good for the stomach; garlic, good for a cold; dandelion, as a diuretic; sage, as
an astringent; and peppermint, good as digestive tonic.
Co-president Jo Sipes called the regular meeting to order by giving each person present a bookmark;
members responded to roll call with answers to the question, “Why do you enjoy gardening?” Jean Ladd
presented a report on anise hyssop.
Standing committee reports included Carlene McCurdy’s suggestions of ways to eliminate plastics from the
landfill, by using that store bag for groceries, your own coffee to go container, your own container for
doggie bags, and keep a plastic utensil in your purse for reuse. Jo Vernon shared a recent National
Wildlife article about birds having problems coping with the increasing noise in the world, affecting
their mating songs and behaviors.
Marilyn Pahl cautioned members not to be in a hurry to get into the garden; it is still too early to
uncover tender bulbs. Cactus will flower if put in small pots and allowed to become root bound. Linda
Myers suggested going bold this year in the garden with red, oranges and yellow to give “pop” to the
garden. Myers also reported that the club donated 27-29 pairs of gloves/socks and two caps to The Deacon
Shop of the Presbyterian Church at Christmas time.
Linda Kuhn reminded members of the May 4 regional meeting. Evelyn Bachman distributed five painted
birdhouses among the members to finish decorating for the centerpieces for that May regional meeting.
Members also signed up to buy croissants and bagels and a raffle item has been purchased for the
meeting. Bachman encouraged members to think about the kind of flowers we would like to plant in this
coming spring’s Welcome Sign project. Ladd and Susan Enright agreed to be co-chairs for this project.

The Garden Club’s next meeting will be held on April 19 at the Wood County Public Library with Becky
Bhaer as hostess.
