In this Sept. 8, 2009 file photo, Bessye Middleton holds a painting of her daughter, Tryna, in Cleveland
Heights, Ohio. Death row inmate Romell Broom was convicted of abducting, raping and fatally stabbing the
14-year-old girl after grabbing her off a Cleveland street in 1984, but his botched Sept. 15, 2009,
execution by lethal injection was called off after two hours. Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael
O’Malley asked in a Monday, March 13, 2017, filing that the Ohio Supreme Court set a new execution date
for Broom.
