ATHENS — Sparked by an 11-0 run early in the
second half, Ohio had its way with the Bowling Green State University men’s basketball team Saturday
afternoon.The Falcons trailed 35-34 at the half, but had no answer for the Bobcats in the second half as
Ohio posted a 72-63 win.“Ohio is one of those teams where you can’t afford to have a stretch where you don’t
have good offensive possessions and turnovers,’’ BG head coach Louis Orr said, adding the Falcons never
recovered from the Bobcats’ 11-0 run. “They have spurtability; this is a team that can go on
runs.‘‘Offensively we settled for too many jump shots early (in the second half),’’ Orr added.T.J. Hall’s
layup with 15:00 to play put Ohio up 48-37, but the Falcons used a 7-2 run, capped by a Jordon Crawford
3-pointer, to get within 50-44.Ohio, though, answered every run the Falcons tried to start over the final 12
minutes. The Bobcats led by as many as 16 until BG closed with an 8-1 spurt to get within nine at the final
buzzer.The Falcons had nine turnovers in the second half resulting in 14 points for the Bobcats. BG also had
problems guarding Ohio in the second half, both in transition and in set pieces.“That was the key to the
game,’’ Orr said about Ohio’s ability to score off turnovers.The score was tied four times in the first
half, but BG never took the lead. The Falcons were competitive with the Bobcats in the opening 20 minutes,
holding a 21-15 rebounding edge and scoring 11 points off Ohio’s seven turnovers.Also in the first half, the
Falcons held Ohio to just two points off turnovers. BG also had a 6-0 edge in second-chance points and got
10 points from Crawford.“When you’re in mid-February, you have to find a lot of ways to win the game,
because each game is going to be different,” Ohio head coach Jim Christian said. “We did what we had to
do.’’A’uston Calhoun finished with a game-high 19 points and added eight rebounds for the Falcons.Crawford
had 17 points, four rebounds, four assists and four turnovers. Crawford was 4-of-6 on 3-pointers.BG’s Craig
Sealey came off the bench for eight points and a career-high 12 rebounds in 16 minutes and teammate Richaun
Holmes added eight points off the bench, all in the first half.NOTES: BG is 9-14 overall and 4-6 in the
Mid-American Conference … Ohio improved to 17-6 overall and 8-1 in the MAC … BG held a 41-32 rebounding
edge … Ohio’s Reggie Keely had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds … There were four
technical fouls called late in the game, two on each team, and the players did not go through the
traditional handshake line at the end … The game drew 10,846 fans … The Falcons host Western Michigan
Wednesday at 7 p.m.
