BGSU hockey loses at No. 8 Western Michigan (12-10-11)

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Dane Walters had three goals and one assist Saturday to lead eighth-ranked Western
Michigan to a 6-1 victory over Bowling Green in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association game.
Walters’ first goal snapped a 1-1 tie at 14:44 of the second period, and he added his final two goals in
the last seven minutes of the game.
The Broncos scored three times in the final six minutes of the second period to pull away from the 1-1
tie.
BG’s James McIntosh tied the game at 12:27, but Western responded with its three goals in a span of 5:02.

Walters put the Broncos ahead with a back-door goal from the right side of the crease on the power play.

The final two goals resulted from defensive coverage breakdowns by the Falcons. Justin Kovacs made it 3-1
at 16:50 and Danny DeKeyser increased the lead to three goals with just 14.4 seconds left in the period.

“That killed us,” BG coach Chris Bergeron said of Western’s three-goal flurry. “We were fighting pretty
good there and we were right there. The last five minutes of the period were pretty disappointing.”
Western held a 26-18 margin in shots on goal, including an 18-10 advantage during the first two periods.

The Falcons’ Andrew Hammond stopped 20 shots.
BG was 0-of-2 on the power play, while Western was 1-of-2.
BG played its second straight game without forward Cam Wojtala, the team’s second-leading scorer. He had
hit his head on the boards in practice earlier in the week.
BG’s Dan DeSalvo, however, returned after sitting out Friday’s 3-3 tie because he was “banged up,”
Bergeron said.
The Falcons finished the pre-Christmas portion of their schedule 6-11-3 overall and 1-11-2-1 in the CCHA.

Western is 9-4-5, 7-4-3-3.
