FOSTORIA – The City of Fostoria Water Treatment plant is now producing lime sludge from its new sludge
press facility.
The sludge is generated by the lime softening process at the city’s water plant.
This is drinking water sludge. There are no foreign materials such as sticks or stones in the finished
product.
The new sludge press removes much of the water from the sludge leaving a nice consistent
"cake."
The lime sludge cake moisture is 56 percent.
The sludge does contain high levels of calcium and magnesium which are beneficial for raising the pH of
soil utilized in various agricultural settings.
Recent analysis of the sludge by the Ohio Department of Agriculture, indicate calcium at 27 percent,
magnesium at 6 percent, TNP of 86 percent and an ENP of 761 pounds per ton.
The City of Fostoria understands this is an exciting opportunity for the city as well as area farmers and
other interested parties.
