Nancy Shellhammer

Nancy Hammans Shellhammer, 84, died Wednesday, July 6, in Vallejo, California after a long illness.
She was born on December 4, 1926 to Charles and Helen Hammans, both deceased. Her mother died when Nancy
was five months old, and she was raised in Afton, Iowa by her father’s sister, Bessie Brown (deceased),
with her three cousins. She had no siblings.
She graduated from high school in Columbus in 1944 and from Bowling Green State University in 1948. Nancy
belonged to Alpha Xi Delta and Kappa Phi sororities.
She worked at Ohio State University, Bowling Green State University and Virginia Tech.
On June 15, 1950 she married Ray J. (R.J.) Shellhammer, who died in 1979. They lived in Clyde until 1965
when the family moved to Bowling Green, where R.J. owned and operated a business. After R.J. died she
moved to Roanoke, Virginia and then back to Clyde. She moved to California in 2007.
While in Clyde, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Progress Club, Women’s Club,
Friendly Philatheans and a Camp Fire leader. In Bowling Green, Nancy was a member of the First United
Methodist Church and the Alpha Xi Delta Alumnae group.
She is survived by daughters Katherine (Kate) Banner of Vallejo, California and Christine (Chris) Gilliam
of Roswell, Georgia, and three grandchildren: Alex Banner (New York), Beth Gilliam Reynolds (Atlanta),
and Scott Gilliam (Atlanta).
A memorial service will be held in California on July 19. The family will schedule an additional memorial
service in Clyde, date to be announced. Burial will be in McPherson Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Clyde or the Clyde Public Library.
