Elmwood BOE admin contracts

JERRY CITY – Elmwood building principals have been given a nod of approval for their efforts – but the
support wasn’t unanimous.
The Board of Education on Monday voted 3-2 to extend for two additional years administrative contracts to
middle school Principal Jesse Steiner and elementary Principal Michelle Tuite. Board members Matt
Reynolds and Melanie Davis voted against the action, as well as against a two-year contract extension
for Nick Wenzel, curriculum coordinator.
Davis after the meeting explained she wasn’t happy with the timing of the extensions.
"I didn’t want to renew contracts before the contracts were actually up," she said.
The current contracts for Steiner, Tuite and Wenzel expire at the end of the 2010-11 school year; the
contracts now have been extended through 2013.
Davis also held the three accountable for what she considers unacceptable scores on the Local Report
Card.
Teachers, she said, are held accountable for scores, and so should administrators. "I don’t think
you should reward someone when there is room to grow."
All five board members supported contract extensions for high school Principal Tom Bentley and special
education supervisor Brenda Schnitker. Their contracts now will continue through 2012.
Salaries for all five re-main at the current rates.
Board President Trent Snowden supported the action.
"We’ve got a good administrative team here and we want to keep them," he said after the
meeting.
