‘Evelyn’s Closet’ opens at Village View church

One local church through an idea of one of its members is making clothing and other items available to
those who need only for a donation.
"Evelyn’s Closet" will be open at Village View Church of Christ, 801 West Poe Road, every
Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The program is named for the late Evelyn Sherman, a former dispatcher at the BG Police station and
retired as the chief’s secretary. She died in November 2008.
According to her daughter, Judy Moore, Sherman’s closet was filled with quality clothing.
"With the economy as it is and so many people need clothes, so we decided we would make the clothes
available to people for what they could afford," Moore said.
Other members of the church got behind the idea and decided this was a better idea than strictly a
standard rummage sale. The donations rolled in.
Adding to the available items are goods left from a similar sale held by Sonlight Assembly of God,
Weston.
Moore said someone at the Weston church heard of the Bowling Green effort and offered to donate items
left over from their sale.
"They brought five pick-up loads and a carload of items," she said.
The church has hundreds of items available including men’s, women’s and children’s clothes.
"We even have one dog coat," Moore stated.
In addition to the clothes, the church is also holding a standard rummage sale with a wide variety of
items available at "very reasonable" prices, Moore indicated.
Among the items available are dishes, toys and lots of books, to name just a few things.
There is also a bake sale on Saturday, also from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Proceeds from the donations from the clothes, as well as the rummage and bake sales, will be used towards
the church maintenance fund or other charitable needs.
With the volume of items available, Moore does not foresee running out of items any time soon. She
indicated they will be open each Friday and Saturday as long as they have clothes available.
Evelyn’s Closet will also be open this Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m.
