College Scene: Hammer receives summer league honor

Ben Hammer, from Elmwood High School, has been named the Valley Baseball League player of the week for
the week ending July 26.
Hammer is playing in the Valley Baseball League this summer for the Winchester Royals. The league is
endorsed by the NCAA and sponsored, in part, by Major League Baseball.
Hammer batted .563 (9-for-16) with four runs scored and six runs batted in from July 20-26. In 30 games
for Winchester, Hammer is batting .304 (21-for-69) with 17 RBI and 15 runs scored.
Hammer will be a sophomore on the the University of Toledo baseball team in the fall.
Curtis Smithey, from Elmwood High School, recently competed in the U.S.A. Junior Outdoor Track and Field
Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Smithey finished 12th in the men’s 400 with a time of 48.63.
The event featured the best track and field athletes in the country aged 19-and-under and serves as the
selection meet for the 2009 Pan American Junior Athletics Championship.
Smithey will be a sophomore on the University of Findlay track team this season.
Rachael Clay, from Rossford High School, also competed at the U.S.A. Junior Outdoor Track and Field
Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Clay finished 10th in the women’s 400 in a time of 55.78.
Clay will be a sophomore at Miami University in the fall.
Crystal Briggs, from Rossford High School, will attend Heidelberg University where she will play
softball.
Briggs graduated from Rossford this spring.
