BG swimmers had ‘tremendous’ effort

There are a lot of positives for Bowling Green’s Swim Club after last weekend’s Greater Northwest Ohio
Aquatic Conference meet.
"Our swimmers had a tremendous meet," said Carolyn Strunk, BG’s head coach, at the conclusion
of the meet Sunday. "I can’t count the number of season-best times and life-best times we had.
That’s really the real reason for being here, to see that kind of improvement.
"Not matter what place, the key ingredient is for the swimmers to see they have made individual
improvement," she added. "That really is the ultimate goal is for the success to be there …
If we swim our best and whatever place we get is what place we get."
Napoleon, winners of six of the 12 age groups over the weekend, ended BG’s string of 16 straight GNOAC
championships by scoring 2,391 points.
BG was second with 2,188 points, winning three age groups. The Gators have won 33 of the 38 GNOAC
championships since the league started in 1972.
"This was a new championship for a lot of swimmers from as young as 4-years-old to rising seniors in
high school," Struck said about the Gators. "Their inexperience showed a little bit. But, at
the same time. they have learned quite a bit in making sure they can be as successful as they can do
down the road whether it be an age group swimmer in the winter or a new high school swimmer in the
fall."
There was only one senior on the team this meet, meaning that approximately 85 swimmers who competed in
the championship meet for BG can return for the 2010 summer season.
"This gives us something to work for next summer," Strunk said about working to regain the top
spot in the league.
Amy Slone. Michael Carriaga, John Bargiel, Katie Womack, Kelly Titus, Sophie Postich, Keri Buff and Mark
Howard were Strunk’s assistant coaches this year.
In addition, there were 18 participants in the Sooner or Later Gator program and current swim club
members Michael Cavanaugh. Marisa Martin, Bailey Burk, Brett Bushong and Peter Burroughs worked with
those swimmers.
Strunk was also appreciative to the BG Parks and Recreation Department for allowing the club the use of
the pool in City Park.
"It’s nice after all these years we continue to have the same amount of pool time," she said.

The final team standings and the age group winners are on page 11 today. The complete list of winners and
BG’s finishers in the top six are still being compiled and will be published later this week.
