PERRYSBURG – The 5 p.m. Saturday Mass at Blessed John XXIII Catholic Church is signed each week.
Tamara Franks, who has been doing religious interpretation for about two years, does the signing.
Her husband, Rodney, who is deaf, is a regular in attendance each Saturday, and is also teaching a course
in sign language this summer at the church.
Franks’ signing experience also includes educational interpreting. She lives in Perrysburg and both she
and her husband are members of the National Catholic Office for the Deaf and the International Catholic
Deaf Association.
The parish chose to include signing as an outreach to Catholics and others who are hearing impaired.
There is also a regularly signed Mass at St. Pius X Catholic Parish in Toledo.
"We want to be an inclusive community," said Fr. Herb Weber, pastor of the parish.
Blessed John XXIII Catholic Parish hold its Masses and other programs at its multi-use Parish Life
Center, 24250 Dixie Highway. An actual church building is planned down the road just north of the
current center and offices.
