County park salary study continues

PEMBERVILLE — A compensation study, spurred by huge raises proposed for Wood County Park District staff
in January, is continuing.
After Monday’s regular meeting of the park board, chairman George Thompson said Clemans Nelson Associates
told a local commission that it had sent out surveys and questionnaires across the state. The firm is
trying to determine what the responsibilities are of county officials throughout Ohio, their pay rate,
and how that compares locally.
Thompson said he is “moderator” of the committee, which consists of Wood County Prosecutor Paul Dobson,
Wood County Treasurer Jill Engle, Perrysburg City Councilwoman Maria Ermie (appointed by Wood County
Auditor Michael Sibbersen) and Wood County Administrator Andrew Kalmar (appointed by the Wood County
Commissioners).
The next meeting for the committee is July 14.
Thompson said he doesn’t expect a recommendation about raises from the committee to the three-member park
board until fall at the earliest.
“I foresee two to four additional meetings,” he said.
Clemans Nelson was hired after public outcry when the board in January approved average pay raises for
the district’s 20 employees of 32 percent. The board cited the employees’ hard work, years of service
and knowledge, and taking on jobs over the years without pay increases as reasons for the raises.
Also at Monday’s meeting, which was held at William Henry Harrison Park, the board heard the 2010 budget
is in the works. Salaries in that budget currently reflect 3 and 4 percent increases, said Parks
Director Neil Munger.
