Pizza & Pages is the new incarnation of a previous book club, Snack -n- Yak, geared toward middle school students.
The monthly book club is for students in grades six through eight from the community, including home-schooled students and Bowling Green Middle School students.
The first meeting is Sept. 24 at 2:30 p.m. in the middle school library.
The biggest difference between Snack -n- Yak and Pizza & Pages is student choice, according to Patti Rish, library media specialist at the middle school.
"Previously our partner, Wood County District Public Library, and I selected a single book each month to discuss in depth. Now we are offering choices within a genre, topic, or theme," Rish said in an email. "September's book will be realistic fiction. We try to select books with a very recent copyright and favorable reviews."
Students may read any or all of the following before the Sept. 24 meeting:
"Small as an Elephant," by Jennifer Jacobson
"Dead End in Norvelt," by Jack Gantos
"After Eli," by Rebecca Rupp
"The Encyclopedia of Me," by Karen Rivers
"Chomp," by Carl Hiaasen
"Almost Home," by Joan Bauer
The group will spend meeting time discussing the genre, the selected books in the genre, and other realistic books the members recommend.
They will also talk about ways to promote the books they liked to their peers.
The emphasis will be on critique and sharing.
The six novels are available for checkout from the Children's Place at the library.
