Summer reading programs explode at county libraries

Reading programs full of prizes, pool passes and science programs with silly putty are popping up all
over the county this summer.
Wood County District Public Library
The Children’s Place launched the summer reading program, "Fizz, Boom, Read!" on Friday.
Youth are encouraged to sign up all summer for the reading program and to pop back in to the Children’s
Place "Mad Scientist Lab" to report reading progress and earn incentive prizes, as well as
participate in storytimes, programs, movies, activities and events. A complete calendar is available in
the Children’s Place and on the library website, wcdpl.org.
Youth ages 11 years and older, still interested in "volunteening" at the library, are
encouraged to inquire at the Children’s Place desk.
Every youth who signs up for "Fizz, Boom, Read!" receives a one-day pass to the Bowling Green
City Pool and Water Park, a one-use pass to the Bowling Green State University Ice Arena, and a one-day
pass the Wood County Fair.
"Summer is a great time to visit the library and try something new," said youth services
librarian Maria Simon. "The Children’s Place is excited about a summer of science, hands-on fun,
and experimentation. The staff is always excited to share what’s new, what they like to read, and to
inspire a reluctant reader."
She said experts agree that summer reading is critical to prevent learning loss. One of the best ways to
stop "summer slide" and motivate youth to read is reading aloud to them.
The Children’s Place will offer a weekly reading buddy program, called "Robot Readers Club" on
Thursdays from 11 a.m. to noon for fun, supportive read-aloud practice.
The audio book collections, both in-house and on-line, will also be featured in the Children’s Place.
Novel Chit-Chats, a book discussion group for adults and youth, will meet and discuss two books.
Multiple copies will be available to check out from the Children’s Place desk.
This summer, the Children’s Place is offering a weekly STEM program, called "Creative Concoctions
Club." Chemists and Junior Chemists from Lubrizol Corp., a specialty chemical company, will join
the Children’s Place staff each Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to noon with recipes and supplies to create,
discuss, and play with solutions such as oobleck, flubber, slime, moon sand and silly putty.
More hands-on "fizzics" experiments will be happening at Make It & Break It with Home
Depot and Legopalooza in June and July. Movies will be shown each Monday morning. Imagination Station,
the Toledo Zoo, Wood County Park District and singer songwriter, Jeff Schroeder will presnt.
Families are invited to attend a performance by Mr. Molecule on Monday at 7 p.m. in the atrium. Mr.
Molecule spins science into fun. This fast-paced and highly visual show demonstrates science principles,
all in the guise of wild and wacky experiments, using magic, puppets and audience participation.
Check the calendar for additional library programs at the BG City Park, Wintergarden and Simpson parks.

Special guest, designer, author and illustrator Bob Staake, will be at the library July 12 sharing his
"Robots, Robots Everywhere."
